Cleaning "Gum" brkae hoods?

My brake hoods are Miche and are the light brown gum type. These are the only items still to be properly cleaned for my 1990 Battaglin road bike renovation.

The hoods are very dirty and perhaps some advice from here would prevent me cleaning them to destruction! Soap and water is not doing the trick

Ian

A little mineral spirits on a soft cotton cloth with a clean, dry cloth as backup. "Wax on - wax off." Actually not wax, but you get the idea. Viva paper towels work well, too.

I always use an old toothbrush and a cake of hand soap. Using petroleum products on rubber-plastic id a bad idea. You want the gentlest product that will do the job. Ed

I'm lazy, so I use what I use to clean up most of the bike....Lemon Pledge spray polish. I just scrub it with copious amounts the stuff using either paper towels or one of my microfiber washing rags and pretty much everything comes off quite easily and the hoods seem to also get a bit "moisturized". I don't think Pledge or any other cleaner/"preserver" out there can slow down gum hoods drying out significantly though, as Oxygen and light are the two main things that degrade them.....

One handy way to clean hoods that causes no mess at all are flushable wipes; no muss no fuss, cleanse off the grime and are usually anti-bacterial to boot. I use Costco brand that has as a cleaning agent Propylene glycol; others use glycerin and should work the same.
