92 Eddy Merckx Century Rebuild
Anyone interested in staying tuned to my rebuild of 92 Eddy Merckx Century? Sweet bike that's seen some miles and needs some loving. It found the right home... Here's a few blurry pics of the bike after I got it and after a 50% break down. Going with new wires, brakes, Campy headset to replace the blown original Dura-Ace 7400 (dented race, rusty bearings, cant find a NOS), new chain, bar wrap, polish and clear coat over the various paint scars, and a deep cleaning of removed components.
Things that may wait are replacement of the 10 spd 7400 series original dura-ace shifters which function but are super sloppy due to age and wear, and the 7400 series BB which has some slight catches. Let me know if you have any recommendations to these regards.
To me a 92 just breaks the cusp of vintage steel, but let me know if I should be posting somewhere else.

I've got a Century of similar vintage, with TSX tubing.
It fits with the vintage theme because it's lugged and built with standard-sized Columbus tubing.
What gruppo are you wanting to put on it?

Those 7403 shifters can be rebuilt. See this link: Repair of Shimano Drop-Bar STI Brake-Shift Levers which also contains Jim McVey's e-mail information. Bottom bracket should be cup-and-cone; if the races are good and the spindle isn't pitted, new bearings and fresh grease will smooth it out again. If the races have gone bad, new/low mileage ones are out there.

I concur w/ Dr. Cannondale -- see if you can rebuild the brifters and the bottom bracket before worrying about replacing them.

This is perfect. Way less expensive than new shifters and allows me to keep an original look to the bike. Thanks!

So I finally have her broken down and clean.

I was able to polish all of the rock chips/rust spots very carefully with my dremmel and I'll be throwing on some clear coat on those scars tomorrow. Wax comes a day or two after.
Good news - The headset races were actually okay, just some frozen bearings that haven't been ridden on enough to scar anything. Bad news - The BB is f'd (see the following link). imgur: the simple image sharer Badly pitted.
