Recommendation for rear derailleur?

I'm looking for a replacement rear derailleur for my 1980s Claud Butler Panache, having bent the original Suntour Cyclone in a crash. The bike has a 14-28 5-speed freewheel and down-tube shifters.

Can anyone recommend a current derailleur model that would be equally simple, effective over this range of gears, and in keeping with the 1980s style?

Why not search e-bay for a replacement Cyclone and keep the bike original?

+1 They're not hard to find, and not all that expensive.

I've had good luck posting want-to-buy ads on craigslist. If you live in a larger metro area, this might work for you as well. If you live in a small town, it may not be as effective but it doesn't hurt to try. Good luck.

i'd buy a donor bike with a cyclone on it, like this one with a bent fork i bought for $60:

it came with suzue hubs, rando bars, takagi crank, and suntour barcons.

buying a cyclone by itself on ebay can be really expensive, especially this time of year -- maybe twice as much as a campy nuovo record.

in the meantime, buy a suntour vx series for the rear.

whatever you do, give the vintage derailleur a full overhaul.

Thanks for all suggestions. Seems I'm not the only one who can't think of anything better than what I have.

Is it possible to straighten the hanger part of the derailleur, or will that just cause metal fatigue?

when i think of hanger, i think of that part of the bike frame, which can be bent back if steel.

can you post a pic of the rd? i would certainly try to fix it. what do you have to lose?

A fellow C&Ver has a vintage Cyclone w/hanger claw for sale right now, over in the FS section. (scroll down a bit)

^ that one has a long cage (gt) if you're into that sort of thing. but if your big cog is 28t or smaller, it's unnecessary.

hopefully those prices include shipping.

^ True, it's overkill for 28T, but a lot of early and mid 80s Sun Tour equipped bikes came that way. I've had a lot of bikes from that era pass through my hands and more of them had the GTs than the short cage version, for what ever reason.

I find the Vx works every bit as well, maybe better than the Cyclone, which at least ime needs a little overshifting. I do like the looks though.

For pure function and probably the smoothest friction shifting I've used, it's hard to beat a Deore. They can be had for pretty cheap too, compared with the Suntour stuff.
