Seems I've been drewed

Recently picked up a mid-80's Centurion. An Accordo RS, so an inexpensive purchase; Infinity tubing and reasonable components. Except the shifters. It came with very cheap looking Simplex clamp on down tube shifters, and the bosses for the original shifters had been ground down to nubs. What, possibly, could the perpetrator have been thinking. I will continue to finish the bike, but have a question. Is it reasonable to file down the remaining boss to level with the braze-on square piece, then put a clamp-on deraulleur over that?

Thanks for any assistance.

Bob

The perp was thinking, "The chicks are gonna dig my sweet fixie!" He was wrong of course...

Yes, you should be able to get away with clamp on shifters. Sometimes frames for these clamp-on shifters have a little nub that keeps the shifter band from sliding down the tube (and damaging paint). May not be a terrible idea to leave a little on for this purpose. What about the holes for the shifter mooting screws? Were they filled? If not you may want to fill those to prevent water from getting inside the frame. Also, you may want to check out the Suntour shifters in this "for sale" thread if they are still available:

A derailleur on the down tube? Sure, why not? I don't know what good it would do you, but I'm all for innovation.

Okay, seriously, yes, file it down but don't file off too much; a little extra material there will help prevent the clamp-on shifters from sliding down the tube.

Great minds think alike! We must have both been typing the same thing at the same time.

I have an Accordo mixte frame that I have just put together. It had only the small diamond stop for the band for down tube shifters, or perhaps a cable stop band for stem shifters or barcons. Seems like you have a few choices, but I would fill the holes.
