Basically, your own money, earned or otherwise.
Even if it's gained from bike deals, and came and went, what have you spent?
I figure $10K, starting with $105.99 for a Free Spirit, 40 years ago.
Probably about the same as on coffee.

I've certainly spent more on bike tools than on bikes, myself.

Still learning
I'd say in the past four years, between bikes, tools, parts, etc., not including some overflow storage rental, enough to buy a brand new well equipped coupe from a certain German Car company with an SUV plant in Spartanburg, SC. I am not married!

My estimate is just a little under $5000, all but $160 of that in the last 4 years. (I blame you guys)
That doesn't count bikes I *specifically* bought for flipping; which have netted me around $1200, by my records, and another $400 in eBay parts. These figures are important, and get put to the fore whenever my wife wants to talk about my "bike problem."

Somewhere between $8 and $1 billion.
I tell anyone it is much closer to the $8 end.

When I could still get decent bikes for $20, flipping offset the cost of all of my keepers - but eventually the cost of acquisition, taken together with the upgrades I was doing on the flips, resulted in quite a negative cash flow.
I probably was in the hole to the tune of a thousand bucks before I even realized it.

Taking an extended hiatus from biking certainly helped keep the total down. I'm not going to bother adding up the last 12 months.

I have a spread sheet...
I really don't worry about it. Everytime my bride mentions the cost I point out some bad habits other people around me have that cost a helluva lot more, like gray market Porsches, airplanes and race cars. Not to mention bars and golf. Makes my Scottish heritage really stand out.
If I had to put a number on it I would say $5,000 over the past 35 years. I spent more than that in a single year when I was racing back in the early 70's.

I've seen most of my investment back in selling parts/bikes, and building a herd.
I'm probably "down" about $1000 from where I started 8 years ago, and a lot of money has come and gone in that time period.
If I sold half of the herd, I figure I'd be close to even, and have a few bikes.
I'm rapidly getting to that point, as it was a plan to raise tuition funds, and has worked to some extent.
Being waylaid into actually riding the bikes was not expected, nor was "immersement."
No regrets.
