Can you help me identify this Benotto?
Hello there,
I am new to this forum so please be kind if I accidentally break any rules
I've had this Benotto for a couple of years and have done a fair bit of research but haven't found anything through google searches. I'm considering respraying it due to the rusty bits and would like to find out what it is before I do it.
Looking at the Columbus sticker it seems it's SL, and the seatpost diameter is 27.2. It doesn't have any braze-ons whatsoever except for mudgard eyelets, but only at the rear dropouts (the forks look original). When I bought it it had mainly a shimano 105 groupset with indexed shifters, so my guess was always mid 80s, but I have been told differently by others...
It has a sticker that reads 'Poggio' on the top tube and the original wheels were miche hubs on an italian rim that had a sticker that read 'RECORD' with multi coloured letters
If anyone has any guidance it would be VERY appreciated!
Photos below (hopefully)

I'm not sure of the model, but if it is a Columbus SL frame, you have a good one.
And honestly, it looks to be in good vintage condition. The paint isn't bad, and the decals are whole, so IMO, don't consider re-spraying! It's only original once, and this one has good patina. Just give it a thorough cleaning and polishing and you'd be surprised at how good it looks.
I think this one is a mid to late 70's model due to the cable and bottle clamps. Mid eighties would have had bosses. The Shimano 105 could have been a replacement for the original Campy or Shimano 600, as I can see the handlebars are a modern ergo bar style replacement to.
This should be a great rider, good luck!

If the bike fits, ride it.
Looks great to me.

Thanks for the reply Giacomo 1. I have been told it was probably 70s before. The bars came with the bike as did a Deda stem with two bolts that make it possible to remove the bars without taking off the tape and levers. Here is a photo of the rust on the dropouts, and there's more scattered around the frame. Don't want to repaint it but the lacquer is coming off too and I wonder if the rust will affect the frame in time.

I'm attaching a photo of the rims that came with the bike. I'm pretty sure they were tubs. Does this narrow down the years at all?
