Could anyone please help me with my old UK Raleigh!

Hey there!

I live in holland and i go to school every day on an old raleigh that my grandfather bought from the UK when he was young.
but it is not in a great state, i'd like to replace some parts of the bike because i really like riding on it! i tried identifying the bike and found out that the gear hub that id like to replace is a Sturney Archer AB hub from 82, it says 82 on it, im not sure if thats the year. i couldnt find any frame numbers on the frame, i hope that thats not important.

and now my questions to you guys are :

1. could i simply replace the gear hub with this one? Sturmey Archer

2. if that would be possible how complicated would that be to do? and would i a guy with a little technical knowledge but a lot of love for the bike, be able to do such a thing?

i would really really appreciete if you guys could help me out! and im sorry for my bad english.

thank you!

Do you really need to replace the old hub? Sturmey-Archer 3-speed hubs are EXTREMELY reliable. Most problems with them are due to poor adjustment of the shift cable. I'm sure you can find a shop in the Netherlands experienced with SA hubs to check it out for you. That said, replacing the hub should not be a big problem; you'll probably have to build or rebuild a wheel.

Sturmey-Archer makes new hubs similar to your AB, but I don't know if their brake shoes interchange with your 1982 hub. If not, a motorcycle or moped shop may be able to provide new friction material for ("Brake lining") for your hub. Good luck.
