I got the heavyweight stuff, which has a rather pronounced texture that I like. The roll is 75 yards or something, and a bar takes maybe four yards of tape, so you can do fifteen to twenty handlebars. You can also use it for rim strips, etc, and I have.
I dint know how many bars I taped with that stuff... lots! And I still have some left over.

White Ambrosio tape looks period on older bikes and cleans easy with a wet sponge with dish washing detergent.
But lately I say go chrome or go home

In other words, maybe. Maybe not.

I like upholstery bias tape--it's cheap--same twill as regular bar tape--and can be sprayed any color if you want with sew brand upholstery paint.

I find that a lot of the grunge that ends up on bar tape comes from the "leather" palms of riding gloves. Most aren't real leather, and they can be washed in a sink full of sudsy water. It's not just the white that gets dirty. Red, yellow and light blue wraps also get grungy pretty fast. My son buys $25 tape and uses it until it's really dirty. I prefer to buy lower priced wrap and replace it more often, maybe some new gloves at the same time. In the old days when we used thin cello tape or cloth, we would apply a new tape over the old to build up a fatter bar.

I totally agree....kinda.
and found this interesting.
"White is a glorious color to grace a set of handlebars. It emphasizes the sensual sweep of the drops and the beautiful curve from the hoods to the tops. It brings out the crisp shadows of the cables running beneath the tape to highlight a perfect wrap. It stands as a testament to the care that is undertaken in maintaining the machine, for without meticulous attention white does not stay white for long. It states that these bars are graced not by the sullied hands of a domestique, but by the clean grip of a leader."

Regardless of color, I think the best looking bar tape is the bar tape that is dirty, worn bar tape. When you see it, you see hours and hours, or even days of riding, sweat dripping down. A bike that has been ridden hard and long is more beautiful than a sparkly, crisp clean bike. Brown leather is best for this, IMO...
