Thanks - this was a fun little adventure. Now I need to tear it apart and rebuild so I can ride it. Our camping season is just coming up! :-)
Thanks for again for the help - this was fun!
So, is a Mongoose ATB better than a Diamond Back Ascent? I can't find any value opinions out there ...

This isn't really an evaluation forum...an Ascent is a newer bike and a different animal. An 84 Mongoose with original gear is going to be more collectible in the long run but maybe not as nice to ride today. Value depends on what YOU want out of a bike, as it is with everyone on the list. There's no real Blue Book for this stuff.

Don't want to start a new thread, so will post it in this one:
- The stem is obviously not original. SO, do I keep it, or replace it with a bullmoose stem? I have a nice new Nitto MTB handlebar that I will be using.
On a side note - what's up with Nitto bullmoose stems selling for $130?! That's CRAZY!!!

The stem looks original to me ( looking at the catalog ) just because it looks gold now it was black, I have a bunch of anodized parts that look gold after years of being in the sun and weather & they were originally black. I would love to find a Chrome ATB in my size ( 20-22" ) as I have always liked the Mongoose brand as a whole before the 2001 buyout. I have a FS1 from 86 that is in the same catalog as your ATB and I just finished a 1998 chrome Outer Limit that I found in the trash.

1986 FS1,
1998 Outer Limit, Upgraded 175mm GT crank, Seat Post, Stem & rear brakes. Has original tires in perfect shape.

Secretly I was hoping someone would talk me into keeping it ... it's so gaudy, it's actually kind of cool! :-) I think a plain aluminum bar vs. black is going to help the look.
Nice collection of Mongeese you have there! Wish I had found something like the FS-1 a few months ago when I went looking for a bike for my six year old. Then again, I found him a cool TREK, and he basically took off riding on two wheels on his first try with it.

Before you buy a new bar, you may want to check the clamp diameter. Sometimes on these vintage mountain bikes they used a 22.2mm bar like BMX bikes. If that's the case, you can find new bars for motorcycles and mopeds in that size or track down a vintage bar.
Edit: the 22.2mm size is also called 7/8".

I guy that parks in my bike station and whom I see riding in my neighborhood all the time has a Diamondback that he did a drop bar conversion with. It looks like a nice ride.

The reason I think this is a Diamond Back is because the seller said so. Supposedly there was a "D" badge on the front that fell off. BUT, the more I Google Image search (chrome mountain bike), the more I am confused ... NONE of them have internal cable routing! All the old Diamond Backs and Mongooses are braze ons ... So, the mystery remains ...

I wonder if the stem quill is 22.2 or 21.1mm(?).
