Please Help Me Identify This Silver Raleigh
I picked up this nice Raleigh from a neighbor yesterday. Suntour components, nice, non-cottered cranks, cool squared-off stem, handlebar-mounted shifters. The seat tube graphics are worn away. Scratched up, dirty and stiff steering, but a surprisingly nice free bike. I was going to use it for parts, but I think I can make this into a nice riding bike for my son or one of his friends.
Seems like a higher-end recreational bike. Any ideas on the model or range of years this could be? Where do I look for the serial number? I do not see it under the bottom bracket.
Also -- what are your ideas for saddle and handlebar tape colors? And what is a good method for polishing up the frame without resorting to powder coating?

Its a low end/bottom end recreational bike: stem shifters, claw RD hanger, steel chain rings, steel rims, etc. Cost of powder coat will exceed bike's value when done. Clean it instead. Paint looks decent anyway. Polishing compound or similar.
Stem is WAY past minimum insert line. Needs to be lowered before riding.

I don't think that works for the Huffeighs (Kent, WA Raleighs). Component codes always work for dating, IF any are original.
From Sheldon Brown site:
American made Raleighs manufactured in Kent, Washington, By Derby Cycle
Sample number: R 003310123 A
- R (all)
- Digits 1 & 5 are year. Sample is from 2001
- Digits 2,3,4 are day (001-365). Sample is from February 2
- digits 5-9 are sequential. Sample is the 123rd bike built that shift.
- A = morning shift B= evening shift. Sample is morning shift.
Letter code may or may not be present, depending on production schedule.
