Visit to the in-laws finally paid off!
We went out to visit Mrs. Trotsky's family this weekend. I got to talking with one of her older cousins about cycling and he offered me this Guercotti for free. Apparently he was the original owner and he thinks he bought it in 1987. He used to race it in the late '80s until he crashed it pretty badly and never rode it again. The front wheel was a victim of the crash. Other than that it looks in pretty good shape. Just in need of some TLC. It should make a nice winter project. I'm not familiar with the marque. What can you guys tell me about this bike? Judging by his description and the tubing, it looks like it was fairly top of the line.

They're Italians with nice parts. A lot came over in the 80s when 10 speed imports tried cashing in on Italian cache with some other frames. Lots of panto, loud paint. You certainly can't beat the price.
I see Cobaltos - those are certainly quite pricey, and it means early c-record. The parts are the real find here.

Man, you're KILLING me! Are those Cobalto brakes with the c record? That was a race dream machine in the late 80's! SLX, C record, Cinelli bars!

Even if the frame had been damaged you have a fantastic groupset, campagnolo C record with cobalto brakes $$$

Looks to me you did real well. SLX bike with what I think is 1st Gen C-Record. That should clean up nicely. You might check the fork and frame to make sure only the wheel was damaged. Guerciotti at that time was imported bare frame and painted here in the States. They could be purchased as a frame or complete bike. Guerciotti is still in production today. There are catalogs on line for the old stuff. You are local to me I have at least one and maybe two Guerciotti bottles I will give you. I sold my Guerc some time ago. Drop me a PM and we will arrange it.

Usually a visit to my in laws was comparable to pulling teeth. Your scored on that visit friend. Yup eye spy 1st gen C Record as the rear derailleur gives it away. Get the frame and fork checked to see if it's straight and if everything checks out. Replace the normal consumables and repack the bearings and you'll have an amazing bike.

I've been avoiding my in-laws like the plague. I may have to rethink this.

Still learning
If you have the original front wheel, worth salvaging the hub and getting a new wheel built with a new rim. Otherwise find something you like at velomine.com
Overhaul the bike and enjoy riding it!

Sorry...but how do you see Cobaltos? What gives it away? The picture of the front brake caliper definitely does not show the "Cobalto" gem...and...the picture of the rear caliper is not definitive for me. I agree with everyone about early C-Record...but...am wondering how to get to Cobalto?
Thanks for clarification...

But...did see the blue fill in the engraving...that is a give away.
Further question...any thought on the front brake? It does not appear to be the same caliper...or am I imagining that? It has the white washer...but the front nut is not the same...

Regular c-record would be deltas. Sort of easy to tell apart
The front looks like a Cobalto with a replaced nut, maybe triomphe. You can sort of make out the blue fill.

So...the white washer is ONLY on Cobalto's? I thought I had seen it on regular C-Record.
But...did see the blue fill in the engraving...that is a give away.

Yes, 'regular' C Record would be Deltas. Cobalto's were introduced briefly due to the Delta's poor performance.

No such luck. The front wheel must have been trashed years ago. It looks like the hub and rim are widely available on eBay, though.

I picked up a cheapo used wheel from the LBS until I find something more appropriate. After a preliminary cleanup and a spin around the block, everything looks pretty good. No apparent frame damage and the C-Record components haven't lost a step. Still needs new cables, pads, bartape, et cetera, but so far so good.

Dream score! I know you can hardly do better than a Rolls San Marco but are you considering a different saddle? All the different yellows are fighting with each other. My useless opinion is black saddle/black tape will anchor the colour scheme down. White is also an option however the pristine white tape would make the hoods look dirty.
