Agree- tragic and all but excellent documentary with terrific footage. Thanks for sharing.

This snip showing a bar-end shifter in 1967 is interesting (Campagnolo lever?).

FWIW- I can state with certainty that Campy bar end shifters date back that far, since they were on my Frejus starting in 1967.

BITD when Tom died, the black humor going around was that he died from violating basic rules of physics, by going up while coming down at the same time.

I noticed how gaunt he looked. His BMI must of been incredibly low fat.

It is a Campy bar-con. Simpson preferred them. There is a test of one of his bikes in Cycling Plus magazine from August 1992, pages 66 to 72. There is a photo of the machine on 69 and another on 71 showing the bar end shifter setup.

The prevalent drugs BITD weren't steroids, but stimulants and pain killers. In essence you used "speed" to get speed, and pain killers to tune out the body's protests.

Yes, another riminder of the good old days when you could liberally mix and match components using what you preferred regardless of the manufacturer.

I remember that well as a teenager in France, distinctively remember asking my dad what doping means.... first time that word was used mainstream on TV, that was a huge story.

This one was mentioned in another thread recently: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dL347aPQJc0

"Slaying the Badger," an ESPN 30 for 30 film about Lemond and Hinault as "teammates."

This is worth a watch, too:

And this short video, recently posted on the CR list, is up your alley, too (Jack Taylor, RIP - passed away Nov. 2, 2014):

And another longer & older doc on the Taylor brothers:

I can recommend Hell of the North, an Australian TV doc about Paris Roubaix, centering on Stuart O'Grady's 2007 win, but using that as a springboard to talk about the race in general.

Amazing amount of flicks out there. Just for starts, love this artsy cool 1965 film from Montreal: 60 Cycles -
60 Cycles by Jean-Claude Labrecque - NFB

(Reminds me of the classic 1966 surf flick, The Endless Summer)
