Always accept the box of "junk" with the CL bike

Picked up an 85 Centurion Ironman today off of CL in very good condition for a very good price. Older guy (as in more than 20 years than me....) says "do you want this box of bike junk, not sure what's in it?". Of course I said yes.

No rare stuff, no real treasure, but enough parts to add to the inventory. Shimano 600 pedals with cages, shimano MTB derailleur and shifters, 3-4 Cateye computers, 7 road tubes, a couple of seats (one nice Turbo), a couple of seat post, spokes and nipples, and some other odds and ends. Certainly more than enough to offset my last parts bin build.

One never knows....

love those deals

bought a box of bike junk of ebay for $10 not too long ago. really crappy pictures and no item descriptions othar than some functioned some didn't. pulled the trigger cause i saw an old 1055 rear derailleur.

in addition to the rd-1055, it also had same gen 105 shifters, 1st gen 600 front and rear derailleures, and a few other various modern (2 acera, 1 sora) rear derailleurs. the rest was nonfunctioning or just junk, but still, not bad for $10. pretty sure he lost money after shipping and fees though.

My last two "Here, you might as well take this stuff too." scores......

1981 Trek 412, this made an already great deal over the top.

1990 Trek 830, I was just buying the frame on this one, seller pulled out the wheels and a box of parts and told me to take all of it. This is what was in the box, brake arms were there but trashed. It's now wearing full fenders and studded tires and a few upgrades such as brakes and shifters but I kept the Exage 300 derailleurs and BioPace crankset.

Oh I just remembered I got a deal like that. Someone listed a Park TS-2 truing stand for $100. I can't pass that up, right? It turns out the seller knew me from here or somewhere, and at the time, I was refurbishing bikes and giving them away. He said, "I like what you're doing," and threw in a nice pair of lightweight modern wheels.

+100

I have found stuff in the "junk" box that exceeded the value of the bike I was buying...one guy gave me a junk box...and it had about 80% of a full Dura Ace grouppo...

In one of my other hobbies, radio-controlled powerboat racing, I gifted a few small tool items to a local friend and boat racer, who also had recently sold off his Colnago parts cache. When he showed up for the hand-off of boat stuff, he unexpectedly handed me a cardboard box with a nice Cinelli bar and stem sticking out the top. Inside were various Campagnolo bits and pieces, and other nice parts he no longer needed. I think I got the better part of that deal.

A friend from a group ride years gave me a bunch of parts that he was going to throw away. Turned out it was an entire car trunk full of parts. Included were many Campagnolo NR parts, a full Dura-Ace 9-spd group in excellent condition (he'd just switched to Campy 9-spd), complete wheel sets (nearly unused), hubs, tires, crank sets, chain rings, saddles, pedals, a fair amount of junk, and a complete but rather old Klein road bike frame. The DA stuff ended up divided between my son's and daughter's bike (probably the only Miyata 310 with a DA crank). I've sold almost all of it over the years, netting lots of money, which friend said was mine to keep, but ended up giving the Klein frame and lots of the junk/mismatched stuff to Recycled Cycles when it didn't move after several attempts (the Klein was weird and poorly repainted anyway). No pictures from those pre-digital days, so you may well say it didn't happen. But some of you purchased items from that stash within the last few months.

I always accept anything bike related, sometimes it ends up being donated to my favorite thrift store or co-op. Other times, the sale of the extras offset part or even all of the price paid for the bike I wanted.

I picked up a nice Nishiki Cresta recently, at an attractive price. Seller had a very basic Diamondback hybrid that he threw in for free. I adjusted the shifting and brakes, put about 30 minutes into it, then dropped it off at my favorite bike shop to be sold on consignment. Consignment proceeds exceeded what I paid for the Nishiki, so it was a pleasant surprise.

Taking a bike you really don't want as part of a deal can prevent it from going to the landfill.
