Builds with 1st gen black Dura Ace groups pics?
It's funny how you can build a complete bike around a single component. I picked up a set of black 1st gen Dura Ace downtube shifters last night for five bucks. No idea why as I was never one for vintage Japanese components but decided to give it a try.
I want to do a full black groupset so headset and hubs...the whole shabang.
Now the kicker...I've finally acquired most of my things to start building frames. Sold my Ducati 800 Sport and bought a Oxy/Acet torch, frame jig...Yada yada. Since I have all Campag equipped road bikes I would change it up on my second build. My first was the 650c Campag 11spd Chorus build I did in my framebuilding class three years ago.
I'm just curious on what's the largest chunk of rubber I can stuff in those calipers? Also did the 1st gen Dura Ace come with a recessed nut option or were they all nutted? I'd really love to stuff a pair of Challenge Bianca Strada tires in there if the calipers will allow.

Caliper pivot bolts can be shortened and re-threaded. Use a good quality, new die for the threading though. In your case you can probably use the nutted rear for the recessed front, and just have to shorten/thread the nutted front to use as the recessed rear.

#1 . The $1 Rivendell plastic insert to fill the recessed nut hole to allow you to use nutted brakes. Probably the best option if your frame/components will work with it, and the most period.
#2 . Swap front/back like Otis mentions. Personally I've never chosen this route.
#3 . Cutting down the center bolts. I've done this several times where I wanted to retain the more modern recessed look of the frame. It is a permanent modification of the component, though. It's easy-peezy, even with my basic Sears (non-Craftsmen) /Harbor Freight tap/die sets & correspondingly cheap hacksaws. Like a less than three minute job.

WV is not flat..
Just found this thread. I have a 1976 Austro Daimler Vent Noir with that group on it. Some of the pics are when I first received the bike before any clean up.
