So after I read the comments about maybe being able to make some money off the build when all is done. What about, at the builder's discretion, any profit from the builds go to your local food bank or the like? A little tie into the holiday season?

No one cares
i think we should just talk about this for 8 or 10 more pages, then do nothing. Just an idea.

That's what I was trying to elude to. It's more than a bike made cheaply. It's gotta have that "it" factor for some reason, or a combination of a lot of reasons. Creativity counts.

I have lots of ideas meandering around my head right now. Looking forward to trying at least one of them for this build. Preliminary rules yet?

My input would be to not govern the fate of the bike at the end.
Having to sell it for $X or donate the money would dissuade myself, and others, from joining.

^^ Thank you. I have a tricycle from the 1950's called a Garton Delivery Cycle that I found at a flea market that I'm going to restore for her.

Looks like I'm in. I just picked up a bike today for $25 and the tires are good, so off to a good start. I'm just waiting for some rules to design around.

To keep it topical, your local bike collective(assuming there is one near) would be a great place too.

I am in as well. I found a $35 entry today.
OK. I bought this today from a very gracious lady (and a sailor too from what I saw beside her garage). I ripped the mattress saddle off as soon as I got home and installed as* killer on it that has been hanging around for a few years. I put on new cheapo alloy bars and brake levers that I've had on hand for years. The downtube shifters will stay for now. My wife said "That's a nice bike. Don't ask me to ride it today". Guess what? I'll ask her to try it tomorrow.

I went out and saw a 1995 Trek 700 step through for $30 - in Portland. Didn't buy cause I don't know the rules yet. It didn't "call" to me either. It was just ...meh.

No, that would translate to "Rule #3 : Meh."
