Tell me about Land Shark Bikes from the 90's..

Stumbled upon a Land Shark bike locally and I don't know anything about them other than its a handmade bike from Oregon.. Are these bikes rare or good etc?

Good enough for Andy Hampsten to win the Giro on.

The discussion over in this thread would be interesting to the OP question.

John Slawta is still in business, and he is not small :-) Seriously, he is a great builder, a tall guy and a strong rider.

Maxway in Taiwan is what I call a large builder. MAXWAY Cycles Co., Ltd.
they make frames in the tens of thousands, for several brands .

Here is a nice little bit about Hampsten and his Slawta built "Huffy"

I meant I didn't understand your initial comment. John Slawta is still building Landshark frames, though he has switched to using carbon fiber. He is a one-person shop, but not what I would call a small builder.

Exactly...Metin had a great Land Shark I almost picked up but I had a financial emergency (replace roof) and I had to pass. At any rate, I put them in the same group as a Della Santa...I'm thinking they are smaller company than Serotta was but just as good or maybe even better than Serotta-I mention that because Andy traded his Serotta for a Land Shark in order to win the Giro-still, the only American to win that race. Hope you get the bike and post some pics for us

Way back when he was in Southern California, he was cranking them out too. They were a popular frame with the local racers in the later 80's.

I talked with John a couple of years ago about building a steel frameset for me, but he was reluctant. He does nothing but custom carbon and nearly talked me into one. Most people love his bikes and each paint job is unique. The steel may develop some collectors value as time goes on.

There's an ample amount of Landsharks here in southern oregon. I'd say an equal amount of both steel and carbon. There was one of his personal hardtail mountain bikes that was colored by his kids for sale on CL not too long ago.
