De Rosa Frame Arrives!
Hello all. Just wanted to post a pic of the new De Rosa, courtesy of RobbieTunes. Very excited to start building it when time permits. Big props to RobbieTunes for an awesome packing job and communication. And another thank you to other forums members for offers and selling me parts for the project. Will be sure to give updates during the process.
Looks even better in person.

Hmmm, it's red, it's Italian, it's a DeRosa?
From RobbieTunes?
Well, it doesn't get better than that!
Good luck, she's a beauty!

It's just a bias of mine, but I believe that the classic Italian marques such as De Rosa, Colnago, Cinelli, Tommasini, etc., especially the steel ones, should wear Campy componentry wherever possible

I agree with you, Campy all the way. If it was mine, I'd install a modern 10 speed Campy group on this frame, ergos and all.

Congratulations on acquiring such a nice grail project frame!
Shimano groups like you will use are a good "stopgap" solution to eventually building out a "Tutto Italiano" grail bike. as you seem to be planning.
I feel your pain about how much the "Tutto" parts are going to cost, which these days can easily exceed the value of the grail Italian frame in some cases....

This is a 86-88 frame, a coherent build would require a campy C-Record/Chorus group

If you are going to hang it on a wall, show it off to your friends and ride it every other Sunday, that C Record would be a great choice.
If you are going to ride it often and really put it through its paces, the op's choice will certainly suffice till he can upgrade to Athena 11 or Ultegra 6800.

Yes...of course I'd love to put all of the aforementioned components on the frame. Please send donations to

There's nothing wrong with your approach. Gomango is, as he usually is, right on point. Enjoy it, and if you want to change to other parts some day, do so. I would not put c-record on a group I planned to ride much, though its bad reputation is somewhat exaggerated. There is no crime in using Shimano on a mid-80s De Rosa.

Surprised that nobody has mentioned this, but keep in mind that he'd need to cold-set the rear of the frame to do that - or ANY modern rear hub with a Cassette. I suspect he doesn't want to do that, although widening it out to 130mm is not too bad. Absent cold-setting, rear spacing is likely 126mm, which probably limits the rear hub to a NR or SR or older Shimano with a 7-speed freewheel.

Robbie left the De Rosa club? But why? Anyways I have the same frame and I made a thread here after I got it with similar pictures and Robbie shared this very bike with me to inspire me to build it up modern. I think he had DA on it though, I built mine up with 11 Speed Athena. This bike is crazy fast, you're gonna love it!
^^ Also I think cold setting this frame is hardly an inconvenience. Robbie may have even done it already! If not it will be well worth it to have 10-11 speeds on this stallion.

Simply an amazing bike to ride, especially when I mounted 700x25 GP4000S II's. Light, liquid, lightning.
Enter, the Wraith. I needed some wheels for that, some serious crit wheels. I had the 7900/A23 set and a DA7900/C24 set. Neither seemed right.
They went on the sale block, and I started stalking carbon tubulars: I posted a WTT ad on CL, and traded both sets for a set of Aeolus 6.5's with tires.
I was casting around for wheels for the De Rosa, and a friend gave me some DA7700/Aerohead wheels. Mounted the 700x25's and pretended I was a good rider.
Same friend decided, after seeing the Wraith, that he wanted to build his own steel frame. The Wraith will do that to you. He wanted his wheels back.
Being a decent sort, I obliged, then tried several combos on the De Rosa, and didn't like any of them. Negative vibes were bouncing off my head.
Enter zeego. Enthusiasm. Desire. Seemed right for the De Rosa, good kharma. Off it went. I recently sent him the Italian Octalink and some DT shifters.
I figured something else would come along, or I'd get tired of the chase, or I'd simply forget about the void left by the De Rosa (not likely, right, Shawn?)
I boxed up the bars/stem/DA pieces for future use. Long cage RD, 12-32 cassette, the whole deal.
Made arrangements to procure a hubset (done) and a DA headset (done).
I'll build the hubs with silver Alex ACE19 rims (21mm wide, lighter than A23's). I'll remount the 700x25's.
And I'll wait.
Something came along, turned me a bit off "the path." I'll ride it, maybe sell it, maybe not.
One never knows. It's not done, as I've decided to accessorize in black; trying to match orange is like trying to rhyme with it.
It, and a couple of others will likely leave the herd. I'm still bent on getting a Wraith Paycheck.
Meanwhile, the DA group sits, and I wait. Something will occur. Always does.

Top tube's bent.
I'm an expert on absolutely nothing, but I say build it and ride it as you like. No one will get hurt as long as the stuff functions reasonably well and there's a few bucks left over for beer. 'Course I probably wouldn't notice if someone switched my bike for a donkey when I wasn't looking, so, you know, YMMV.
Then again, you ever try to shift gears on a donkey?
Looking forward to seeing how it builds up.

So easy to goose people.
To be sure, I couldn't really care what most people ride.
FWIW I had a nice De Rosa SLX that I lovingly rode for six years with DA 7400.
It never exploded once.
Still have the frameset if someone needs one.

I'm liking the white cable housing. Hey GoMango, wanna give up those bottle cages?

Those bottle cages are hard to get now, at least the good ones. They apparently shipped production to china and you can really see the quality difference.
