Compact Crankset for C&V Build

I'm slowly gathering parts and pieces for my '86 Specialized Sirrus, I will be looking for a compact crankset, I would like it to look vintage, and be lightweight, I will be replacing the bottom bracket at the same time, so I have some flexibility there.

I see some pretty good looking modern crank sets, but they are virtually all black, not the look I'm going for.

What are some options that have worked for others? I plan on using the 105 group the bike came with, but switching to a 7 speed freewheel, run in friction mode.

Thanks,
Gary

Sugino makes a nice compact double that would look good on a bike from that period.

Excuse the chalk...

Stronglight 93 can be built up with a 37t inner chainring. 122 BCD Conventional Chainrings - Red Clover Components

Velo Orange has this 48 & 34, but the $$$: Grand Cru 110 Fluted Double Crankset, 34x48t - Cranks - Cranksets - Components

Does it need to be new? Sugino made some nice 110 BCD doubles back in the day, in fact they originated that standard. It's almost like they were thinking ahead to this possibility...

Any of the Sugino 110 doubles will work. Myself, I have reused chainrings from a mtb triple to create my own double. Often the large and middle rings on a mtb triple are almost identical to the rings on a compact double. I think I used a 46/35 combo on my Katakura.

I'll have to double check but if I remember right this was a Sugino 110 crankset as well - set up with a 50-36

Sugino, SR Apex, even a mid to late 80's Deore crankset will work just fine.

Campagnolo Victory/Triomphe cranksets have a 116 BCD and take 35T inner chainring and they are not too hard to find on eBay
Miche still makes 116 BCD 35-48T chainrings

I have successfully used Sugino's in the past...they are good, look right and you can get the chain rings that you want...

Add SR/Sakae to your list. I'm using a 110bcd model SX with a 34/52 setup.

They have a bunch of models that came with a 110 option. CR, CX, SA, SX and more. Velobase has pics.

I'm pretty sure that and the VO are same thing. Who knows they might be made by sugino. Either way they are nice crank sets. Good luck on the build.

I have a Shimano square taper double, compact, new. R-something. Silver. Weighs a ton.

+1 on the FSA Vero or Tempo. Acetone will remove the decals.

shimano RSX (I have had 48/36 and 46/36)

square taper MTB triple, minus the inner ring (often good for a 48/36, and a cheap way in)

I absolutely love compact cranks. 50/34 and a 7-speed 11/28 cassette is all you will ever need on a road bike, unless you're doing the Fred Whitton or something else daft.
