Cycle Systems Academy Podcast / AL frames.

The latest Cycle Systems Academy Podcast is about buying and selling used bicycles. The host pretty much said DO NOT buy any 10 year old used aluminum or carbon bike. The risk of catastrophic failure is too big. What do you think?

Carbon makes sense, but aluminum?

All used bicycles should be inspected routinely. We've seen the [steel] Trek fork failures on here; & there are plenty of failed component pictures, AL and otherwise, on the web. At least with AL (and steel) you can usually spot cracks as they propagate. I'm not sure it's as easy with carbon prior to failure - but I really don't know.

It's a commonly held opinion, and often debated in these forums. My personal experience doesn't suggest any such thing, but the AL and CF bikes I've had were not abused and in really good shape.
