maybe you can use 8 speed shifters+ (new consistently spaced 7 speed freewheels ) Sun Race , etc.
that side play on the center-on upper pulley slop makes things less fussy. all shimano .
the bar end shifter for 8 were called Ultegra still sold and the Rt Rr is switchable
But Maybe an IGH would Be even easier to Use .. the shift while stopped and Not pedaling is simple.

Out of the box:
There are Shimano rear hubs out there that are 126mm and 8/8/10 compatible.
Then you get some 10sp DA DT shifters. Use polished 105 10-sp RD, FD.
Whatever crankset you want, with 9sp or 10sp rings. A 10-sp chain.
You will be enlightened.
Or cold-set and do the same thing on 130mm rear. What's 2mm each side.
You can probably just use a little more "uumph" without cold-setting.
My work here is done. 3.50 at the counter.

As mentioned in other threads, RSX 7 brifters are rock-steady so keep an eye out for a nice set. Better quality than the new gear if they're not abused. I regret selling a set.
Frame clearances cause most problems, spacing and dishing, etc. I've got a couple of 7 speed/126 projects midway going now.

Your gearing may help refine your choices. Do you want compact double, triple, mtb cassette....? Bar ends are a reasonable compromise between DT and brifters and work well with triples because of the friction front. I agree that you may as well use a modern 130 hub if you are starting from scratch. 8 or 9 speed would be my choice for the range of cassette options.

WV is not flat..
I changed the 7sp. indexed down tube shifters on my Black Lightning to these 7sp. Shimano Tourney shifters. They work great and blend in very well with the black theme of the bike. I switched out the rear der.with a later model 105 long cage which allowed me to put a 14-28 Shimano freewheel on it. Works for me.

Thanks for the backstory Jim... I understand the thread now it is placed in context. Somehow I just knew this was not something you were doing for one of the bicycles that you'd be riding. I had every reason to believe we were being punked (I *only* use punk as a verb) prior to this post.

You can cram in a 130mm road rear wheel with an 8-speed cassette as is (or cold-set the rear dropouts slightly), and put 8-speed Shimano bar end shifters on it.

You can source first gen Shimano 105 downtube shifters pretty inexpensively on the big auction site if you want to keep your indexing old-skool. They are 6-speed indexed and work great. The advantage of Shimano over Suntour is that any new $15 Sunrace, Shimano or SRAM 6-speed freewheel will work just dandy.
I did try using a Shimano SIS derailleur and freewheel with Accushift shifters and it was less than successful.
Hey Jim,
To present yet another option to you- Suntour Command Shifters! They're awesome- I prefer these MUCH more than bar end shifters- shifting is right at your fingers and thumbs, enough so, you can shift while braking.

A 7403 hub would open up some options for you. Although they are 130mm it will mount easily in a narrower steel frame (thanks to shape of axle lock nuts). Compatible with newer 8,9,10 speed cassettes and various brifter, DT, and bar end shifters.

I think I'm even more a Luddite than is Jim. I have no bikes except 120mm & 126mm, so there have been some really useful tips here.

I certainly don't think I'm really the candidate for that run-off. I would probably win the "Rip Van Winkle" award for going off-line in Asia for 30+ years with two bikes, only to return just a few years ago to discover that people were talking about "indexed shifting" of which I'd never even heard.

My current project is learning about Uniglide freehubs and whether I can squeeze a 126 hub down to fit my 120 frames. A thread on the subject is sinking with barely a ripple.
