Masi did not do serial numbers, think plausible deniability to the taxman. If 8409 (in smaller numerals than the build code - size) that is the date of production, so September 1984.
This seemed to start during the Prestige era, not done on the Gran Criteriums wher many have a month year stamp on the fork steerer.

Those black Super Record bits came on a Cuevas I bought earlier this year. Unfortunately the shifters, crankset and rear derailer had been substituted with 74xx Dura-Ace bits, and the seller claimed not to have kept the original parts.

I have a California Masi GC frame #833 that was seen by Bob Hovey and said to be from 1975. I believe 833 is the serial #.

just a little trivia concerning the Masi 3V Volumetrica: in one of the videos and blogs that an American racer (that would be Rory mason, but read below) posted documenting Giovanni Pelizzoli (the originator of the Ciocc brand) he shows him a big box filled with the special headtubes and etc. for the 3Vs and tells the American that he (Pelizzoli) was responsible for building a lot, if not all, of these as a contractor to Masi.
I'll try to track down the blog and update this so we don't have just my leaky memory to rely on.

EDIT: that mention was not in one of Rory Mason's blogs, but in Pelizzoli's own blog "the magic boxes", and scroll down to the shot of the box's contents

I got an exact set of those brake levers and calipers on a old bike I got off craigslist. I didn't know they were particularly hard to find? The calipers are the same black anodizing...would those be worth much money? mmm..

Thanks, Katiesmalls, for sharing the pictures of the Masi, especially the facts you and others included about this unique Campag group set. I had never seen, or heard of this particular set, its nice to learn something new about my favorite sport.

I doubt that your posting the links, or even mentioning the LBS you worked at, if it is against the rules, a moderator or admin would just let you know why. For me these are clues for future searches I might need or want to do. I may well be wrong about these things, I am not in any position to say, or judge, what is permitted here. Thanks much for sharing your knowledge and your bicycle with us.

Bill

Yes, Masi Carlsbad did use serial numbers with only a handful of exceptions. Not the Italians though.

Earlier on he there was an image of him with some Masi parts and tubes. I would not be surprised if he makes many of the current new Masis for Alberto too.

( unfortunately as far as pics go, my technology with cameras is about up to date with these bikes, I will try though, just the sunlight and my creative get pictures side haven't yet met on a happy cog, plus I have to hide these bikes from wifey, or my riding days will be permanently gone. )
Another trick we used to use for toestraps, especially the thinner ones (I was sponsored for a while by a company whose straps were really pants, thin and stretchy) was to thread from the outside as rootboy suggests, but through the perforation on the back surface of the rear cage, then bend it tight round to exit the other perforation on the rear of the pedal cage, then up and through the loop on the toeclip itself - this way, when the strap us pulled tight, it holds the shoe behind the widest part of the foot so even if the strap "gives" a bit, you can't pull your foot out - as a road sprinter that was always a concern of mine! You do need to be careful to let the strap off a long way when you *do* want to take your foot out, though!
