Velo-cheapo before or as found thread or lipstick on a pig
If the idea of a consolidated thread doesn't float the boat of others, I can change my title to reflect that.
Here is my entry, an 83 Fuji Royale II that I curb picked this past summer. I'm not really sure what happened to the fork but Jeff at Spectrum said it was the most unusually bent fork he's encountered.
Cost-$0
Fork repair-$25
So far that's as far as I've gotten with the bike. I will post an updated tally of costs in this thread.

Great job saving that! I'm looking forward to seeing how this progresses.

I'll raise you a Fuji Sagres, I trash picked from somebody's fall cleaning in NJ, nearby Tony Soprano's house. Unfortunately, the RD is lying somewhere on Interstate 80.

^ Lol, that Sagres is effed up! Thanks for setting the bar for "Lowest Starting Point" so high!

Here's my entry: the crusty frame given to me this summer - no doubt to clear space at the giver's house, and reduce space in mine.
And the lipstick has been liberally applied here:
Total investment:
Frame, HS, BB, crank, saddle, seat pin, crazy shim, calipers: Free, given to me
Derailleurs: Came out of the parts bin
Chain: Came out of the parts bin
Wheels and tubes: Came out of the parts bin
Tires: (I know this is getting old, but...) Came out of the parts bin
Stem: Yup. Parts bin.
Bars and levers: The bike coop asked five bucks, I slipped the guy ten. You gotta keep Karma happy.
Stripper and paint: Had it on hand, no outlay.
Sandpaper: same story.
Evaporust: Ditto
Metallic Gold Sharpie: A sample from my Crayola rep (nice, huh?)
Sweat equity: HOURS AND HOURS
Cable and housing: OK, I went to Wal-Mart and dropped $5.67
It kills me to admit I have an entire $15.67 invested in this build.

^ Mark, nice, is it French? $15.67 and the fenders fell out of the sky?
Please review the rules, but that bike would be disqualified as you obviously didn't build it during the last 24 hours unless you had an army of Santa's elves assist you.

(To answer your other question, the fenders almost did fall out of the sky. They were given to me as "trash" and I've had them on several bikes, but this is the first that they actually look decent on.)

I'm going to need lots of lipstick for this one:
An Austrian-made 1969 Sears 3 speed I picked for $25 (26 days on Craigslist at that price too LOL). Old 3-speeds are the only consistent bargain around here, the hipsters won't touch them. Other than the torn seat and flat rear tire this bike is rideable as is. Now I just have to make it pretty.

Found at the Dump on a Saturday (years ago), took it for a sixty mile ride the next day (most enjoyable ride of my life), on Sunday morning, and didn't spend a cent on the bike...
Before...
After...
This old CCM was given to me for free. Pumped up the tires, oiled the chain and instant cottage road bicycle that doesn't do hills...

I'm going to be slow on this one. Trash picked pre war, pre Raleigh Dunelt boat anchor. Rusty with bad primer/paint.

Purchased yesterday, picking up tomorrow.
full reynolds 501.
I am as yet unsure of the make, possibly Raleigh or MBK.
I have a minty RSX groupset to go on it - this would push the budget up of course, but add immeasurably to my riding pleasure as I much prefer STI shifters.
Hmm. Decisions!

Here's my "Before" -
1980ish Hi-Ten Apollo prestige frame with a Tange chrome fork and HS, BB from the co-op, wheels and 600 Arabesque bits from a Ross Super Gran Tour Professional, some old tires from my junk pile, Fake-icanitor plastic saddle, seatpost from eBay.
I paid maybe a little too much for some of this stuff, but the best parts were actually free.

^ Don't be silly; why would a tricycle need four tires?
(Also, there are only two wheels in the photo. And hopefully at least two usable tires, that's my entire stock of used $0 value, 27x rubber)

My 1985 Trek 460 I picked up for $70. Pic is from CL post on dude's porch that I bought it from. The rear wheel is trashed and it needs a good lube, tune, and cleaning. New cables, bar tape and chain also needed.

Must have been a real short dude. Looks like the frame is a 54cm, and the saddle is slammed all the way down.

I'll play with this Carlton Corsa 5 picked up off of my local auction site in NZ called Trade Me, for the very steep sum of $10 NZ!!
Here it is,
I will just re do it as a 5 speed, some wider GB bars that I got in a trade with a mate, I traded these and the wheelset for about $40 NZ worth of parts that I had(that owe me nothing).
Wheel set is on it now, tyres in last pic on front of bike will get used, from memory they are a Continental tour ride 27 x 1 1/4(will check that) with puncture protection, they owe me $40, so not going to work out too cheap build wise.
It will be a nice retro ride for me when done, I have put this and my Falcon Olympic off for too long.

^^ It looks nice. I have a wolber wheel at work that I'll put on it'll match somewhat to the front. I have a pair of Michelins that look almost exactly like your tires that i was thinking of using.

I am likely to use this Cyclepro Rendezvous that I picked up this fall for $60. Moustach bars have already been added and the drive train is being changed out. Mostly just waiting on some new cantis to get it all together.
On the other hand I have a beat up old Lygie that has been in the dungeon for over a year. Doing a fixed gear conversion on that might be fun and bring me in more under budget.
