My Velo Cheapo looks like it's going to come in over budget, but as the donor bike is so good it seems a shame to re-component it in a half-arsed way. So it's getting the nice RSX groupset that was won off eBay last month and decent cables/housings.
honestly, it's an absolute beaut of a frame. Fits me nicey, has clearance for 622/28s, full Reynolds 501, it's kind of a poor man's Surly Pacer / Kona ***** Tonk / Salsa Casseroll.

Wow. Who'd have thought the name of that popular Kona steel bike would trip the swear filter. I hope i never need to ride it to the grim Lincolnshire town of S****horpe!

Got the first pig
put together enough for a spin yesterday.
Need to work out the numbers on frame/fork geometry. It's a bit twitching in the handling. Not sure if it's short rake, or what.

A 53 degree day in Michigan in December is rare indeed. So it was a great opportunity to sand and paint the Fuji Sagres. Given the color I'm using, I've even come up with a theme and name for the build. Secret for now of course!

My lipsticked pig is almost done. Just adding new brake pads. It's a 1988 Rockhopper - all original except the Panaracer Smoke mtb tires.

I thought I might try this one. Not sure if I truly know the rules, but the word cheapo caught my eye. Also, I really kind of miss having something that looks rusty and old. If I am outside the parameters let me know, and I will build this thing anyway.
Decided to use this frame, a made in Ireland Record. Bought it a few years ago for 25 bucks thinking to replace another Record that was damaged. Loved the bike, I weigh enough to appreciate gas pipe.

Got to love the quality of the fit and finish, the first one I had was made in Nottingham and was actually pretty nicely done. This one looks like the brazer just finished a liquid lunch. I plan on clear coating over the patina, other than a little light sanding leaving the discoloration.
Built a wheel a couple years ago, on a coaster brake AW hub, with a 700c rim. Never used it, it was just messing around.
Trying to decide if I want to do scorcher bars, or drop bars on a GB stem. This stem and dropbar was what was on my old Record, so I know it fits(at least it did seven years ago).
Was going to try to use cottered cranks, till I realized that everything I have that I could use is 165mm. Since I plan on riding it, that wont do, so its got to get something a little newer.
Other than the frame, everything so far came from dumpsters or was found at the recycler, with the exeption of the tires. They are a couple I took off my tourer when they wore out to much to take out in the middle of nowhere.
Another decision is fenders. With a little brute strength and ignorance I can probably get the chrome fenders to fit over the 32mm tires. The black fenders actually came off a 27" tired bike.

Here's what I'm working with, shown after I wiped a lot of grime off it:
Not shown in its entirety, it comes with a chain case (missing a few parts), front wheel (dynohub dated 1956), headlight, and a rear wheel that doesn't quite match (date is 1953, so that's good, but it has the wrong rim).
I found a rusty rim in the parts bin and have already relaced the mismatched hub and spokes onto the rusty rim. The chrome is pretty good, but there are holes rusted through the sidewall in once place . JBWeld to the rescue!

i vote Carlton. I like the orange/red over the purple. No other reason. They both look pretty rough and in need of a laying on of hands.

I am now unsure which bike to do . . .
1) The Carlton I originally posted,
2) This Falcon Olympic
I will possibly use this crank set on the Carlton and throw some Shimano 600 at the Falcon?
I think the Falcon will be easier when it come to sourcing a BB if it is needed . . . unsure, your thoughts?

I'm going to need lots of lipstick for this one:
An Austrian-made 1969 Sears 3 speed I picked for $25 (26 days on Craigslist at that price too LOL). Old 3-speeds are the only consistent bargain around here, the hipsters won't touch them. Other than the torn seat and flat rear tire this bike is rideable as is. Now I just have to make it pretty.

I have the twin sister to this bike. And I have no idea why!

You might be right, but I don't have a personal inventory of bikes to pick from for this contest, nor do I have the time to drive around for the next four weekends trying to find a better deal. $25 for a working commuter bike that I picked up on my way home from work after making one phone call? That's a deal considering what my time is worth.

Maiden voyage today. So far the costs have been:
bike €67
tyres & tubes, erm, €30
cheap platform pedals €5
wheels are true, chain lubed, front hub serviced. Still to do: install RSX brifter groupset, repack rear hub, replace BB with cartridge.

Looks like I might have figured it out, thanks clubman. There were some other issues as well.
And now, for all that hupla, the anticlimax.
I have decided on using the drop bars, and the black fenders. I like the flipped north road look, hate the ride.
There were a few other pictures but I will save it till the before and after.

I could beat osiris419 $70 mark for his Trek 460 with any of these below by as much as $30, but I won't likely enter them. Because I figure if @rjhammett, @wrk101, @Thumbpic, or @bikemig play, I'm toast anyway.
Motobecane CV41 - France only model
Cannondale ST400
1984 Trek 520 - I paid 50% over asking price.

I picked up this scabby ST700 a couple of days ago. This thing is seriously rough but it is complete and just needs a little love.

thanks for asking, but When the cost basis is low and the bike is my size........... More like N+3!

Excuse the awful picture but here's a Centurion of some sort that was out the front of a house with a scrap sign attached to it. As found a few months ago, still the same but I've just made a start on cleaning up the wheels.
It will never be the most exciting bike but I'm going to tidy her up, respray the frame and raid the spares box for some upgrades and hopefully transform it into something more respectable. Should be well under budget!
Oh and if anyone can shed any light on the model and approximate year, I'd appreciate it
