...I've also been spending quite a bit of time in the road bike forum. As with many other forums there is a lot of good information over there, mixed with some rather questionable advice, but the thing that I notice most is the tendency for egos to get in the way of pleasant conversations, a trait refreshingly lacking from this forum.
We used to refer to the ego attitudes of the competitive cyclists as "the raceurs edge" referring to Gillette men's deodorant ads back then. Most of the "hammer heads" (hard core racers) were generally argumentative plus they never had any money!
It seems that the C&V forum appeals more to mellow types (or burned out racers)...

The BF members use proper English grammar and with intelligent prose and humor sprinkled between verses. Other forums have insult snipers lurking in the textual back ground ready to ponce on anyone that commits a flaw in describing or stating a fact with unneeded derogatory remarks, rather then adding to the discussion.

My favorite online forums by far are this one and PassatWorld. Those of us with turn-of-the-century (1998-2005) B5/B5.5 generation Passats tend to be very supportive of each other, because we are bonded by this extreme love-hate relationship with our cars. I have learned a great deal from both forums and met some valued friends through both, and the Passat forum has saved me a lot of money over the years.

While this place is "Classic and Vintage" there's a pretty welcoming atmosphere here- from big highwheelers to electroforged Schwinns to Italian race bikes to suspension forked MTBs to current steel frames... there's not a whole cadre of folks saying "that's not vintage!" There's an overall joy of bicycles and cycling evident here. And that leads to the "residents" having a good sense of community.
