I guess I'm toeing the line between sophist and scholastic, then... Nearly completed the first hurdle of grad school, and doing some fun projects as editor/translator/writer.

Field engineer for a local water utility, but "eligible" to retire in spring - not going to happen yet though, I still enjoy my work.

I don't think there is a line to toe: I would have said that todays academics are the descendants of yesterdays Sophists. Myself included, no doubt.

Ha, perhaps. Depends on who pays the bills, I guess. Too bad I'm not from the landed nobility - like most all people in the thinking trade, I gotta sell the goods - and I can't spend my days in leisure as a philosopher prince

Sophistry of the Humboldtian Humanist flavour will have to do, for now.

What a great thread. Lots of engineers here, I see.

I'm a freelance cinematographer. Like a photographer, but moving pictures, or as we used to say, film. 30 years freelance; I've worked on movies big and small, and TV shows, but most of my work has been in commercial and corporate stuff. Just was in AZ shooting 2015 campaign for a golf product company. I've also taught cinematography a bit and have been very proud to see my former students find their way into 'the industry.'

Professional Cat Herder...

My official job title is "Construction Risk Specialist" aka Safety Guy. I work for a national, industrial roofing and siding company. I teach, inspect, cite and generally ride herd on about 100 roofers on various job sites, primarily on the east coast. Massive amounts of travel, but I love the job. Been with this company 15 years in a variety of positions, construction in various forms for over 35 years.

IT/design/research. My team (which 3 years ago was just me and one contractor I hired) built the prototyping platform (and many of the projects that use it) for this little online auction company you might have used before. I work closely with developers, product managers, designers and PhD type folks to built/test/build/test/implement stuff for the desktop and mobile web.

Years ago I was an accountant, but that turned out to be a dumb idea.

I run this tiny little C&V hotel up in the northwest corner of the country, which each and every one of you should visit if you ever make it out this way.

Now with my kids both away at school, I'm gearing up to go back to painting and making guitars as a second job. The pay's not as steady but it'll help keep me from wasting all my downtime on the internet and fiddling around with old bikes

Landed nobility? Professors? We are rich in many ways, but usually not in coin. Our official chariot is a twelve year old Camry.

I am in IT, like many other people here. I have been a network engineer since the late 80's. I started as a CNE/Master CNE and now work mostly with Cisco firewalls, routers, switches. I have started a few consulting companies over the years, two of which are still in business but I am no longer a partner in. I currently have my own company (I am the only employee), contracting for a large utility (with occasional side jobs for my previous business partners).

Is that one of the onramps to the 'new' Tacoma narrows bridge? I may get a chance to ride out that way tomorrow morning when I'm visiting my in-laws in Gig Harbor.

Lots of engineers/drafters in here, nice! I'm the CAD Manager for a mid-sized multidisciplinary engineering firm. I still get to draw pretty pictures sometimes too. I work in a bike shop as a mechanic/salesman in the summer occasionally as well.

I went into the Marine Corps with plans of being a cop when I got out. I wanted to go swat or undercover. After discharge I went to work at a local factory while I applied for several police departments. No one wanted to hire me because a lack of a college degree. I never once thought about working at a fire dept. On a whim I applied and was hired first go around. Its a great job, like I said I couldn't imagine doing anything else. It defiantly has its highs and lows. Last night we had a house fire, pretty sad so close to christmas seeing a family lose things like that. But there are several highs that go along with it.
