The LAST piece . . .

I am happy. My pretty mail carrier made a special stop at my house at 7 pm on Monday to deliver the LAST piece needed for my Vitus 997 project.

The piece is this set of Record 10 speed brifters

And it will go on this Vitus 997 - the ovoid carbon fiber tube version of the 992

Along with a full group of Campagnolo Record Titanium 10 speed drivetrain, Record brakes, Record Ti hubs, Mavic Open Pro rims, a 25 mm Look carbon seatpost, a Cinelli XA stem, some Cinelli bars, a set of 25 mm Continental tires from fietsbob, and a saddle that I haven't picked yet, but might be an old Flite Ti, an Avocet O2, a Swift Ti, or an old Ideale.

Finding a Record long cage RD, a Record triple crank, a replacement titanium Record axle, a replacement derailleur hanger - all that took a long time. I even learned to build wheels for this project. It's been a good learning experience. But up to now, hasn't produced a rideable bike.

I have been working, off and on, mostly off, toward this for four years. Yes, it is the project that never gets done. The bike is supposed to be the Swiss Army knife bike. Light, vintage (sort of), triple crank and narrow range cassette, comfortable tires on light wheels. Suitable for everything from a century, to a paceline hammerfest, to a hill climb.

What is your LAST PIECE needed for a project? Share the story?

Wow, you're treating that frame right. All the time and effort put into it will make just make it that much more rewarding.

For me, of all the bikes and parts moving around my place lately, the last piece is a pair of shifters to wrap up the tandem. Not as easy as I had hoped it would be.

In my mind that last piece is one of those things that must happen sooner or later, but it is a milestone that goes unobserved and often not remembered. Fifteen years ago I changed a lot of diapers, for example. Now I don't. One of the ones I changed, somewhere around a dozen years ago, was the last one. At the time, I may even have been thinking to myself, okay, this has got to be the last one. But when was that? No idea.

Ack, sorry about that. I've been looking for a set for two years. They used to be $250+ and that was too much. After 11 speed came out, the well heeled guys started replacing 10 and the price finally dropped enough for me to resume looking.

Not that this will be a budget build, I'm scared to add it all up actually.

It is a PX-10. I'm not sure what to do with it. I kind of don't have the budget left for another project. I could just polish up all the original pieces and put it back together. Or just sell it.

There's never a last piece. There's always *something* else.
