Raleigh Royale

I bought this Raleigh Royale while my wife and I were on a road trip.

@daf1009 and I were trying to date it.

Best we could come up with is 1962.

I started the tear down and clean up.....

Can anyone date this saddle? The condition is amazing! B-15

It sure does look like the Gran Sport of that era, right down to the color and the components.

There is a date stamp under the right edge of the cantle plate (at the lower right of the photo shown). Looks like
72
C
72 means the frame was made in 1972, and I think B refers to the 3rd quarter, so July-September. As you show, there is also a code of some kind painted on the leather, but I don't know how to interpret that.

@rhm

It's D64

Plain as day when you know where to look
Brooks must have had good leather that year.

So...the D64...puts it in 1964? Is the D for Q1?

I believe it. I have a 1966 Raleigh DL-1 and the B72 that came on it has several of the same details as your seat - the "look" of the stamped parts, the chrome, the nameplate, the leather doubler under the top.

Just found this catalog page on my laptop. I'm not sure of the date, but it's from a UK Raleigh catalog that I labeled "1960s."

I just cleaned it and then soak it in synthetic transmission fluid. Best chain lube I've found.

WOW! Flog that is a real gem! Great find and really nice work!

Rudi, I've handled about half a dozen B15s (and currently own two), but this is the first Brooks I've seen with the under-layer support added. Is this unusual or is this something seen from time to time? Maybe @tony colegrave can chime in as well.

Bob, I don't have extensive notes about this but can assure you it's not unheard of. In my "study collection" of dead saddle tops there are three Brooks"standard" and one "narrow" with this extra layer underneath. Also a couple B.72's and one Swallow. On none of these can I clearly distinguish whether the stamp says B.15 or B.17 but my memory tells me they are all B.15 models from the early sixties. The Swallow, I recall, was dated 59.

To compound my ignorance, I can't even identify the material of this extra bit of material. On Wrights saddles it is clearly a coarse woven cloth, but on the Brooks ones it might be leather or cardboard or something. I'd vote for the latter since it doesn't hold up as well as the top.
