Prices are only meaningful after the item actually sells.

Free shipping anywhere in the world, and no bidding, just a buy it now price? That's not an auction. If you want to know what it's worth, sell it in an auction.

Or better yet, how about a $4,140 Raleigh? This one is pretty swell: https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/260526/

And items sold at auction don't necessarily reflect a steady-state value. They represent the values of things at the particular points in time when those auctions ended. Value and demand both have wildly fluctuating temporal components-- on a different week, the value could be more, or less, depending on who wants it and how badly. And this is especially the case for things that simply aren't common enough to satisfy a regular demand. pb*bikes has demonstrated that hard to find things can be worth way more than the average selling price of the few examples that are found.

Who said it's an auction? It's simply being offered for sale on eBay. I don't see anything wrong with the price, or the method of sale, but that doesn't mean that I would buy it. It's a collectible item, over 100 years old, with historical significance. Personally, I think it's a great example of its kind, as well. Too bad more isn't known about this particular example, like whether it was used in battle, and who it was used by. It might sell, it might not. What's the big deal? People have paid more for bikes of lesser historical significance.

Actually, with an auction, you only know what the second highest bidder is willing to pay. You have no idea what the winner was going to do. Money could be left on the table.
