For those who cannot get to the Eroica California

I would love to fly to California for the Eroica California, and have no doubt I could find a bike in my shed that would be fun to ride and would be the subject of universal admiration there but the fact is, I have a son who will be starting college this fall and I cannot justify anything as selfish as a weekend in California.

So here's what I'm going to do about it:

On the very day that the heroic Californians ride their 122 miles on their heroic bicycles, I am going to ride 122 miles in New Jersey or maybe Pennsylvania. I'm going to ride a bike that's older than I am, I'm going to stick to dirt roads as much as possible (like, at least a few miles), and maybe I'll work an ocean view in somewhere.

And anyone who wants to join me, you are welcome to do so. In fact, I encourage you to join me. I'll even let you camp in my yard the night before and the night after the ride.
Heck, I may even by some beer.

Now, if that's not tempting enough for you, or you wouldn't want to be seen riding around New Jersey for whatever reason, I encourage you to plan your own ride that day, whether it's 40, 65, or 122 miles, and ride it with some other Bike Forum members, and tell us about it here.

Who's in?

OK, I'm in. I'm putting it on my calendar now. I hope to have the L.H. Brookes ready by then.

That sounds cool. I really hadn't been following the L'Eroica posts because I also know I won't be doing it. Your post made me check into it, and I am surprised that it's being held so early in April. I would think anyone in wintery climates that is in shape enough to ride 122 miles in mid April probably rode many heroic rides through the winter months. That being said, I will try to do a ride on dirt that day. I can't promise it will be on a vintage road bike due to the very good possibility of snow on the ground, but maybe on a vintage mountain bike.

I live in California and am even tempted by your generous offer, especially as it's early enough in the year to ease any concerns about humidity, bugs etc.

I'm in...but...will do it in Georgia...and probably a much shorter route...as I am not physically prepared yet for longer distances...but...in the vein of celebrating this...I will make the time to do the ride! So...what is the date of the California ride...so I can put something in my calendar!

This is tempting! I have two I can choose from and I think it might be the older one. It would need attention to be ridden that distance. April 12.

No worries, if there's that much interest (which I very much doubt) I'll simply edit that offer out of my post.

We can carpool and take my Sprinter! You won't even have to take the front wheel off your bicycle.

I will be in the gym having a squat workout doing reps with poundages 3 times the distance they are riding. L'squats with L'deadlifts to follow.
Having a flat tire as part of the total cycling experience is highly overrated. Knowing how to fix one quickly is not.

Now the temptation is greater! I just realized I have two more to add to the decision tree!
1. Not likely:
2. Strong maybe, but needs significant clean up and adjustments:
3. Another strong maybe. Needs to be built up with the missing parts:
4. Not likely due to it still in primer:

I'm returning from St. Petrsburg on the Saturday, if I am not too jet-lagged I'll come, but doubt that I will be able to handle 200 km.

That and what followed certainly made me L'laugh. But probably not in L'shape do anything of this length too soon.

No, no, no! If you don't want to ride 200k, organize your own ride! Mine is 200k and completely unsupported, like all my rides. It's not for everyone. The miles are long and the day is short. There will be a minimum of waiting around.

Fair enough! 200k is outta my league, so I will sit it out.
