71 Super Sport questions
I've had some his and hers super sports that are all original for about a year now and now that the ol lady and i have put some miles in on them i've been thinking about a couple of things we could do to them to make riding the old stuff more enjoyable. Thing is while i've restored/ modded many cars, i've never done a bike. I was wondering if ya'll could point me in the right direction on some things.. first with my bike i would like to get a more BMX style handle bar setup and get rid of the brake levers on the inside of the bar. secondly, my girls bike had wide handlebars and she has a hard time finding the gears with the levers on the stem. what kind of gear setup can i use and still maintain the OG handle car situation. thanks for all the help, i'll get some pics of them up soon.

You can easily install upright "tourist" or MTB type handlebars in the stock stem. You'll need to make sure you get bars with a 1" (25.4mm) diameter center. Here is one example, but there are many more to choose from: https://store.velo-orange.com/index.p...-22-2-dia.html
The ends of most tourist/MTB bars are normally 22.2mm in diameter which means you will need to replace the brake levers with tourist style levers having that size clamp. The tourist style brake levers won't have the extensions (levers on the inside of the bar) you speak of.
The '71 Super Sport ladies' model came with what are known as "all-rounder" handlebars with a 1" (25.4mm) center and 22.2mm ends. You could replace the stem shifters with inexpensive friction type thumb shifters like these: Sunrace SL M10 Handlebar Mount Friction Thumb Shifterset 3x5 6 7 Cable Housing | eBay
No matter what you change I recommend you keep all of the original parts, should you ever decide to sell the bikes they will be worth much more with the original components.
