1990 Miyata Carbon CT3000 - how can I clean hoods?

25 year old Miyata!

It rides fantastic and loves to go fast.

The white brake lever hood covers are a bit messy. I'm thinking of putting it on ebay (too many bikes already), so I want to clean them up. Not sure what chemicals I can use...

Try not to use harsh chemicals (IMO, Acetone's way too harsh) on them as they can speed drying/aging. I always use Lemon Pledge spray on furniture polish on my (80's) old Diacompe white hoods, applying them liberally and scrubbing them. They always turn out really nice and clean, plus the Pledge seem to moisturize the hoods so they never hardened up on me (yet?). Only thing is, old white hoods will never come back as white as they were when they were new, so don't be surprised if they still look just a tinge yellowish or ivory color after you clean them. It's just the normal aging the material goes through as exposed to the air that goes deeper than the dirt and stains on the surface.
I remember using the same cleaning method on my Mavic SSC 440 white brake lever hoods in my components stash, and they similarly cleaned up as my Diacompes always do.

You could try a dilute solution of SoftScrub (it has some bleach in it, so it's probably harsher than Pledge). It gets my white hoods really white. I mix the SoftScrub about 1:3 water and grind away at the hoods with an old toothbrush, then wipe clean with a wet cloth (water only). Leaves them very slightly sticky feeling for a couple days, but that goes away.

I've had luck with bleach white and a soft brush. Also lava soap and a brush.

Sweet bike! I have one too, I love it! I found a product called Tuff Stuff, it cleans almost anything and is gentle on parts.

I used oxyclean. Black hoods would suit it better.

Ultrasonic cleaners are the best for this kind of gentle work. These pads in the pic were from the late 1950s and were covered in a gross hard grime... I don't have a before pic handy but they came out so nice.
