Dia Compe 510/450 Center pull replacement pads

Can anyone offer suggestions for replacing these pads in the original holders or new pads and holders. Thank you.

Go to Kool Stop International - High Performance Bicycle Brake Pads Since 1977 for a listing of pads, you will need pads for a smooth post.

Desertdweller-

Don't toss the holders. If I remember correctly, they are a different diameter post from Mafac and MTB brake assemblies. Maybe just find a replacement pad to fit in the holder?

Yes, I was advised that no correct sized posts were available. I wondered if anyone had found a pad with a good fit. The mavic pads seem small.

thanks for the link. These brakes seem to have "special" requirements.

They re-issued the Gran Compe 450 brakeset. You may want to contact them and see if they are selling the pads separately.

NEW :: type :: DIA-COMPE

Desertdweller-

Check the measurements of the Kool Stop Weinmann pad inserts. It may be possible for you to open the back of the shoe holders and slide those in since DiaCompe built many parts, interchangeably, under licence from Weinmann.

Thanks, good idea. I've been trying to find exact size of the Mafac pad. I read somewhere that Dia Compe built Mavic in the later years.

Yes, it's true that Mavic sourced brakes from Dia Compe, just as Suntour had been doing for years. I see no reason that they would revise pad dimensions by a "subtle" amount that might mis-lead your eyeball measurements. Those look to be the most popular size of Dia Compe pad, as used on both single-pivot calipers and canti's.

What you say seems reasonable, however I have been corresponding with Tim Watson from Kool-Stop. I have discovered at least 6 different pad measurements/models. Significant differences in fitting the base of the pad in the holder. The closest so far ar Weinmann 6 dot. And the posts are 6.9mm (.250) significantly smaller than what's currently available.
Thanks to all that have shared ideas. I appreciate it.

@Desertdweller did you solve the problem with your gran compe centerpulls? I have the same question. I recently picked up a pair and I'd like to replace the brake shoes.

Yes, I did. You can use a Kool Stop pad for Suntour Superbe if you have original Dia Compe pad holders.( I have extras) you can use Mafac holders and Kool Stop 4 dot pads. (I have extra pad holders). Mine are 510's not 450's. They appear to be the same but I have no way to compare them. We can measure if you wish.

The outside dimensions of the pad holders are 43.5 x 14.5. I don't have any mafac racer type pad holders. Are you using these brakes on your Trek TX900? I have a TX900 that I'm rebuilding but the brakes came off a 1982 Trek 720 that I'm rebuilding as well.

Looks like campy style might be the ticket. They measure 40 by 12, Kool Stop International - High Performance Bicycle Brake Pads Since 1977

I pulled out the brake shoe and it measures 40 x 11 on the base.

I did the Campy, I was not happy with the fit. The depth of the holder and interior angle were off. The Superbe 37x13 were the closest for mine. I was told the 510 and the 450 were different. That is not what your pics suggest. Both the originals and the Mafac's have around a 7mm shaft.
Here's a pic of the pieces I found most useful. Sorry the site will not allow me to upload a pic. Yet again. I am stopping my annual premium membership because it is too frustrating to participate.
These were for my 1982 728 not my TX900. I sold the 728 a while back. Please pm if you are interested in purchasing my extra parts.
I have been following your 900 project. Very cool.

Well the 900 project has fallen by the wayside but I'll get back to it, . I'm in the middle of 3 projects. I'll shoot you a PM about the parts.
