Overhauled my first bottom bracket and only ruined one cotter. I thought it felt a little crunchy... turns out there were a bunch of dead bees (or something - very greasy) in there.

Respoking a couple of wheels. They were perfectly fine the way they were, but I thought they could be better.

If I have the time this evening, and I probably won't, I hope to disassemble the headset on the Motobecane. It has developed a notch at straight-ahead position. It is just a Tange Levin headset so if I have to replace it I won't be too bothered. But at this point I can't remember if it is French or not. Duh... The ST and BB are so I imagine the rest of the bike is too.

Outstanding. Don't feel bad, I bent a cotter while removing my first time. I had put penetrating oil & let it sit overnight (as a preventative measure), and a bike mechanic acquaintance gave me his Park Tool cotter press. I was all set & excited. What I didn't realize is that I had the press on slightly crooked, so the cotter bent. I had to hack saw the bent part off then use a punch & hammer to remove the rest of the way.

Not today, but I did recently get my fiancee's Raleigh mixte built up enough to test ride. If she doesn't cotton to it, I may just keep it for myself.

I ruin more than half the cotters I remove. I just consider it normal. When I don't ruin one, I consider myself lucky.

Typical C&V day.

worked until my brain bled.

I looked at my C&V bike and said "not on your pretty little chrome lugs, my dear..."


rode modern steel 28.8 miles in 93 degree heat with index pegged at 98.
sweated a lot, but didn't push it. drank 2/3 of a bottle during...

Finished, wrang out the headband and socks, hung up the jersey/bibs.
Showered and put on loose clothes.
Drank a 24oz Yuengling and now I'm pretty much done in.

Me too. This shows how good my memory is. It's a VeloOrange headset, and yes they do sell a French headset. Haven't measured it yet. We are currently eating homemade non-dairy coconut-based ice cream. I'll get back to the bike when I'm finished eating.

Oh wait, I did something else bike-related today. I rode to work and back.

Addendum: It is a French headset as expected. It shows some developing indentations on both top and bottom from the caged bearings, and will eventually have to be replaced. But for the time being it will be fine. Perhaps too I should measure the bearings on the bottom and replace with loose balls. Or wait until I replace the entire thing.

That's exactly what happened with the cotter. We got the Bikesmith press because neither of us trust ourselves with a hammer. I'd used it once before to tighten a loose cotter, but didn't realize how much it would slide around while I was trying to remove one. Should have held it with another wrench, which I did with the other one. Once it started to bend, it didn't seem to stop. I got it almost all the way out but the bend kept it from fitting through. I had to push it back in and hammer it a bunch to get it straight enough, but I was glad I didn't have to do any cutting or anything. A lot of that stuff would be easier if I didn't have to do this stuff in my living room. Luckily, we ordered a couple of extra cotters with the press, so I plopped one of those in and was all set. I had put some oil through the seat tube to at least get me through riding for the last few months, so it was pretty sticky in there. I tried to take some photos but everything was covered in black sludge. I assume the bugs were bees? They were just about totally coated. It's smooth like butter now.

@forestine - good call ordering extra. I just ordered 3 Raleigh specific cotters from the same place & they're in the mail. You're doing great though. Keep us posted on your progress. You never know who you might help with your information that you share.

I am always late to what I did today. I can tell you what I did yesterday as nothing significant has happened yet today. I examined some brake levers, Shimano 105's and Superbe Pro's. Looked at the Masi and determined that I need to put the 105's on it and take the Superbe's off and swap the handlebars for ones that I can mount the 105 levers on. A plan of action decided on!

My garage faces west and is always hot. I just can't work on bikes in 85+ degree space with 70% humidity! Hopefully I can do something over the weekend on the growing stack of projects. If the garage is tolerable tonight, I will execute most of the plan, unless the stoker wants to take the tandem out.

New to posting here, but have been reading for a while... Pretty lucky week for me. Picked this up at Play-it-again sports for 69.99 two days ago.

I picked up a 1971 Raleigh Twenty in all original state. It's in fair condition cosmetically. I've repacked front hub, disassembled rear Sturmey Archer AW hub & cleaned/lubed. Took care of bottom bracket as well as the headset with usual new bearings & new grease. Replaced all cables/housings & brake pads.

Replaced the the steel seatpost & original saddle (3 lbs) with alloy seatpost & my B17, and replaced brake levers with Velo Orange City Levers, and a new trigger shifter. Unfortunately the original shifter has loose rivets holding the plates together so shifting is "iffy". The original black rubber grips were very hard & cracking, so used black cork grips. The original Raleigh pedals weighed almost a pound, so put on some MKS Sylvan Touring pedals (after adding more grease to the bearings).

I replaced the 20" (406 bsd) tires & tubes, but will rebuild the wheels as 20" (541 bsd) and am just awaiting the rims, new Raleigh front hub.

So....that's what I'm doing.

The 58cm Expert, sans wheels only, is from jjames1452 in Dayton, bought end of January, but waited for free June delivery via Tesla. The CXP22/105 wheelset from Velomine, the cog from Wiggle UK, the Turbo saddle from my spare saddle bin, and the new Serfas Secas I had in my inventory.

Just test rode it for about 15-20 minutes. It is so much more comfortable for me than a 1988 56cm Ironman I have. If you don't have one yet, I highly recommend an Ironman.
