Would you pay $1000 for a leather saddle? How does it compare to yours?

On my Peugeot PX10 I have a Brooks Leather Swallow cost $85 on CL! On my Gios Professional I have Gilles Berthoud Galibier Leather saddle cost $215 at Ben's cycle Milw Wisc. Both are stylish and most of all, comfortable.

    And it's used!

I ride an Ideale 80 saddle that I bought about 38 years ago for $12. I've moved it to 3 new bikes after the original one I got it for.

    Just another clueless seller, IMO......
But dang, there sure are a lot more of them lately, specially ones selling Euro C&V parts and components.
Even if it was priced at something like 200 bucks, pretty as it is, I'd still consider that used saddle as over-priced.

I've got a couple Brooks Pros since bike shops were trying to get rid of the things in the late '70s. One was $7.5 and I think the other one was about $12. Can't see spending over $25 for one.

Those Idéale saddles with the aluminum rails don't come cheap. Of course there's no way I'd pay$980 for on, but as leather saddles go, they're fairly light.

Look at the other things he is selling. Yes, he does not have a clue. So, where did he get his clue to price this in this way. You don't have to look far on ebay to find out. It's a very disturbing trend. And I can't stand it.

I was thinking of someone else. The guy who this seller was also influenced by, IMO.
Look at what else this person has sold. A bunch of mid range Shimano and SunTour, etc.
So when he gets a saddle like this, where does he look for pricing guide lines? Ebay of course.
And the hyper-inflationary prices of one or two sellers who are changing a lot of vintage parts pricing norms. Intentionally. For their own purposes. At least starting to. It's becoming wide spread, and only going to get worse. So it goes. Rant over.

I've never paid that much for a complete bike, so for a saddle? NFW.'

Of course, as always on eBay, asking prices are meaningless. Sold for prices are all that is meaningful.

A search of completed auctions for ideale saddles shows that they sell in the hundreds of dollars. But a thousand? Maybe he'll get lucky and there will be someone out there who absolutely MUST have this saddle...It's not like bike people ever get obsessed right?

Well then, I am a proud owner of an $800 saddle. I only paid $50 for my vintage Ideale though. Wait until I tell my wife!! Reverse girl logic. I saved $750.

At some point things leave the sphere of bike parts, and enter that of collectibles. Once that happens, all bets are off. It's not whether someone would pay $1000 to sit on a slab of old leather, but whether someone would pay that for one to hoard and maybe sell to someone crazier yet years down the road.

For my part, of $1000 a saddle would have to come with a warmer, and she better be attractive.

Sometimes these stupid high prices are more by way of tactic than an attempt to sell. Let's say someone plans to auction a rare item. Since the auction only last a week there's a good chance that most of the potential bidders will never even know it's put there.

So, you put it out there as a fixed price item at a price higher than you ever hope to get. It stays out there, and people begin to watch it. After a month or so, where there's a pool of interested watchers who might bid, then you start the auction.

So, IMO- this is simply a preview period, and later they'll either do a "Dutch Auction" sort of thing by dropping the price slowly until someone bites, or they'll put it out on auction hoping that at least two people want it bad enough to drive up the price. Either was, the small dough spent for the idiotic listing will be returned in spades when it commands a better price than it would have if it were auctioned and only one person bid.
