Haven't mounted these I have in my stash on any of my bikes yet,........ but If I'm eventually going to, it will be the one:
Simplex Retrofriction bar end shift levers......
Based on my long experience with Simplex DT Retro's, I can only expect really good results with these bar ends from them.....

I've only had a couple of sets of bar end shifters, both Suntour Power Shifters, I don't like them. The Suntour Power DT shifters are my favorite so I assume I don't like barcons. Maybe I just never gave them time but they feel awkward to me.

Shimano SIS era barcons work nicely with SIS era derailleurs and freewheels/cassettes if you want indexing. And there's a lot of them out there, reasonably priced.
For friction-only, I like the SunTour ratchets; with the Shimano a close second.

I have Suntour Ratchet bar ends on some bikes which I like. Have them on my vintage Specialized Rockhopper '88 with drop handlebars. I have modern Shimano index/friction shifters on my Surly Cross Check with mustache handlebars - sometimes I run them friction, other times indexed. I bought a pair of the black Suntour "Bar-Con" (says Bar Con on them) shifters which are 7 speed index or friction, but haven't found anything to mount them to yet.

I have Campy, Simplex(non retrofriction) and Shimano L600 fingertip(friction). I have not tried Suntour. But........if they are better than the Shimano L600 then they must be magic. The L600 are so smooth and effortless. Best I have tried by a long, long, long way.

I like the curve in the Shimano shifters better than the others, it makes pulling up on the lever easier.

I have a set of SunTour barcons that ratchet and also a set of SunTour Accushift that are indexed or friction. The Accushifts are 7 speed and work with the Sunrace freewheel in indexed mode without issue.
the friction barcons though are what I like more as there is appeal in the simplicity.

IRD Power Ratchet Friction Thumb Shifter Set
mounted in bar end shifter pods. Shifting is super smooth and the length is shorted that regular down tube shifters. No hitting your knees when you stand up to climb hills.

I have run both Suntour and Campy Barcons. I prefer the action of the Suntour shifters...
On one bike, a Fisher Cross bike found at the dump, Shimano seven speed indexed/friction Barcons were present. Those are the "cat's butt", in my opinion...

I use the Sun Tours on my Euclid RD touring bike , and the Deore Shimanos
the Campagnolo ones seen above are used with the old Rally RD which moves across the freewheel 6 with less cable pull
As they do have a shorter total cable pull ..
1 Shimano retro force spring is OK balancing the FD return spring, but ist relegated to a parts bin..

I'm completely satisfied with the set I installed on my latest build, with 6sp, Uniglide cassette in index mode.
Bar-ends are the only shifting system I've tried that I like as well as, and possibly better than DTs. That includes brifters, twist grips , and thumbies (adapted to drop bars).

I just picked up a pair of drops with Shimano pods but nothing else. I grabbed some Suntour downtube shifters from the co-op but am still at a loss to mount them. I'm looking for the Lever Boss screws (called Lever Axle in UK?) and the Lever Boss covers. If anyone can direct me to sourcing these parts (or any bar-end shifter parts) I'd appreciate it. I've been wanting to set up barcons for ages.

I have a set of NOS suntour six speed accushift, and I sort of want to use them, but the rubber lever covers are so flimsy feeling I am worried they will come off.

The only bar end shifters I've used were newer 10spd sram shifters. Very snappy solid shifts but I do have a pair of Suntour ranching shifters and some campy bar end friction shifters.

The classic Suntour barcons are great. The new Shimano are super smooth too. I use both in friction, you can choose indexing on the Shimanos, I never do. Only style shifters I've used in years on my 2 bikes. Love them. I've never banged my legs on them, no matter what. I don't understand how that happens! Friction is satisfying and oh so quiet.

Picture please, I've got a set of these and was going to mount them near the stem, but as barcons...hmmmm.

At the moment, the only ones that I've used are the 8-speed Ultegra (SL-BS64). I was given a set a few weeks ago, and I'm in love when them for commuting. I'm pretty well sold on the concept, and keeping my eyes open for something more period correct eventually.

I have never had bar end shifters but have been thinking about them for my "newest" bike. I set it up a month ago with SunTour DT ratchets, the first time I have used those shifters since my racing bike nearly 40 years ago. What shifters! Now I remember why I always felt this quiet superiority racing against whole pelotons of Campy equipped bikes.
