1978 Nishiki Olympic Royale rebuild
Hello all,
I posted here a couple years back when I first looked at and bought this bike. For an update, I reconfigured the flat bar and added a Syntace aero bar. I've put over 1,000 miles on her and have completed two triathlons. Now I'm wanting to update the drivetrain to 105 or Ultegra (leaning to Ultegra). Looking to replace with Compact 50/34 crank, Front and rear derailuers, rear hub rebuilt into the 27" wheel, and 10 speed 11-28 cassette, and maybe brakes also. Considering painting the bike as well, though not certain I want to change the look. One question I haven't been able to find an answer to is What bottom bracket is on this bike? Is it 68mm English or something else. And what size clamp on front derailuer? Also what else would be recommended for this rebuild? Thanks.

A Nishiki of that era is most likely an English thread bottom bracket. You'll have to measure the shell of the bottom bracket to determine width (most likely 68mm) as well as figure out which spindle length for the crank you have. Your fd clamp is probably 28.6 but you should borrow some calipers or get a pair to measure properly.

Well to answer simply, I'm 6'6" and 308lbs. This 64cm steel frame is about as strong as I'm going to find in the proper size. Fire What it's going to cost me to update to Ultegra, I couldn't even touch a newer bike with that drive train.

The Olympic frame is gaspipe tubing and therefore far from the strongest that you can find. It is not uncommon to find high quality used bikes in 64 cm size selling for very cheap, so with a bit of patience you can end up with a bike with the component group that you want and a far better frame. With the same money, you will end up with two bikes and one that is far better. On top of this, your Olympic is not wide enough to fit new wheels without spreading.

Thought I'd share the finished results. Stripped down to frame and fork. Headset looked good so I cleaned and regreased it. Drivetrain completely replaced with Ultegra 6700, compact crank 50/34, 10 speed 11-28 cassette, Vuelta Corsa HD wheelset, PZRacing bull and aero bars, Nashbar long reach brakes, quilll stem adaptor and 100mm stem. In very happy with the results. Seems to have taken down about half the weight.
