Let's say n-5 for now. N-8 should be doable.
But realistically, I'm just hoping to do n-1 and then to do it again... And again...

2015 = N/2 (half the keeper fleet needs to go), ditto flip inventory. Consolidating homes to one location in 2015 (from two different states), lots of overlap in the two locations right now. Already dismantling one workshop, its an eye opener. I have found stuff I lost years ago.
Already sold my most expensive keeper. More to go.
+1 Orderly storage helps. My frames and bikes are well organized, I need to get wheels and handlebars organized next.

N + 2 last year picked up a couple of unknown wrecks that I stall soon be asking help on identifying, this year year an old Raleigh 3 speed wreck coming in shortly, after they all are roadworthy have to unload two of them just no more space, along with the bikes in present use. Every time I make some space in my store room the wife uses it as a kitchen store room, so I sell a bike & gain a dough mixer - I cannot win.

I certainly do enjoy looking at custom bikes.
One of the options down the road will be to severely contract the stable here.
Let's say right around retirement in five years.
When I do, I could easily see something like this Moots Routt45 filling several slots for me.

I bought two lady's Raleigh Sports last fall in order to gather parts for my Raleigh Superbe. Both will go in March/April. And then there's my velo-cheapo build, which will get sold off in some configuration or another (much of its parts are from one of those lady's Sports). Otherwise, I don't plan on much change.

Not counting bikes/parts that I "flip"...although I am more of a "stripper"...do a lot of parting out and selling frames.
For my personal fleet...it has grown crazily this last year...so...I am HOPEFUL that this year would only be n+2 (which has ALREADY occurred)...as I am basically out of storage...and I cannot ride all of these bikes! That being said...I like some of the "historically limited" bikes that I have...even if they are not for daily riding...bikes such as the recently acquired (from Mr. Scott!) 1964 Raleigh Royal, 1958 Raleigh Reg Harris, 1962 Raleigh Blue Streak...etc...(figured a few pictures were needed in this thread!).
If I run across some other "historically limited" or "significant"...or even..."great stories"...N+X might ensue

Definitely N+
2014 saw us, as a family, hit N-3. That's net; more than three bikes were bought and sold. By summer I want to have a dedicated gravel grinder and maybe one more nice road bike, possibly financed through sale of the "silver jet" Cannondale. Come to think of it, we're already at a net N+1 for this year. Just gotta keep up the momentum.

This, so the plan is N[i+1] < N[i]. But we all know how that usually works out, don't we? The trouble is, they are all special in one way or another. Or flawed enough that they wouldn't be especially valuable to someone else.

The plan last Fall was to sell a few this Spring, but Winter boredom led me to pick up a few frames to build up. So I now have a Proteus and a Gunnar Rockhound that I am looking for parts for. Plus the 2 I was thinking of selling (Serrota and Mongoose) I can't remember why I wanted to sell them other than I was getting tired of maintaining so many bikes. It's been a long winter.

Hard to say but I am at least hoping for some inventory rotation. There's a couple I'm not loving quite as much as I thought I would, nice bikes but they just aren't clicking. They aren't C&V, maybe that's why.

N. I believe that I am currently happy with my bikes.
I have no need, and no extra $$ to increase...so no planned n+.
And each of these has their own very real reason why they won't be leaving...so no n-.
that being said....there is always the case of the unbelievable deal showing up...and if that is the case there is always the potential for an unexpected addition.

Still learning
While my signature shows I am n+3 and it is only February, I am -2 frames, a Peugeot PX-10 and a Trek 950 MTB. I'd like to have @wrk101's success, but with 0-20 degree days and probably 16" of the white stuff, local sales will not happen until spring.

2014 unexpectedly turned out to be a n-4 bikes and n-3 frames plus some parts year. I am hoping 2015 goes by as n 0 but fiscal factors will certainly play a hand in that. The big issue would be what to sell and if I can get my money back I lost a lot of money 2014 transaction and can't afford to do that much longer.

I expect the end of the year will leave the same number as now, but there will be a few exchanged.
There are two potential additions, to remain capital neutral though, about six or seven will need to go to get the two. I demurred on one late last year as it was not fiscally responsible, and thankfully it is not being actively marketed. The other I have pursued and unfortunately is not for sale, but it's not ridden and probably won't be.

Hmm. We've been trying to "simplify" for the past year or two, so the general philosophy is probably n-a couple. I'm quite happy with my regular riders and don't have any desire whatsoever to replace them. However, the simple truth (as it is for others in this forum) is that I've some excellent bikes that simply hang and that goes against my other philosophy, that bikes are meant to be ridden. It's a painful realization for a hoarder - I mean "collector" - to reach, but the '89 Paramount, Freschi, and Gazelle Champion Mondial aren't even 65-degree-Sunday-afternoon-riders anymore. That said, I guess I will contribute to the data point showing a drop in collection size.

Plan on N-3.
The 753 Paramount will be going on the chopping block so keep your eyes peeled
85 Fisher Montare lost its utility spot to the C'dale
....and the Trek Stache 8 will get another CL/ebay run but not in dire need for money so it'll sit unless I get what I want for it.
In place of those I have a MB1 I have to finish installing a new seat tube and my other road frame that's half built.

2013 saw the herd go from 14 down to 10.
2014 saw the herd go from 10 to 4.
2015 can only go to 5, max.
I see no reason to change the Final Four, but the Lotus could use a better home.
I never say never on another Centurion.
They speak to me, like 157 Riverside Avenue.

I have an old RockHopper that I've had nibbles on, and a Soma with Campy Athena that I've put up for sale once before that had little interest. Once the two of those are gone, I'm either going to add a new single speed to the fleet or just keep with what I have for a while. I've been a little too good to myself this winter.

This will be an interesting thread to revisit at the end of the year...maybe we should start a "table" with everyones' name...and their prediction for the year on where they will end up...then maybe a small competition to see who actually makes (or exceeds) their prediction!

In the last 3 days I have reduced the herd. I sold a Merckx Century frame, a Bridgestone RB-T and a Maruishi Record. I have a few more to sell. I always have my eyes open for a nice Italian bike/frame or a Raleigh Team Professional. I think it will b N-1,2,3 for 2015. No new bikes for 2015 so far.

2014 Surly Big Dummy (stays)

Shrinking a must!
I have to admit, that I am an extreme hoarder. I have several hundred bikes, and space to store them. But in a few years I will be selling that space and I figure at minimum, a hundred bikes need to go each year. For the most part, mid range C&V: Schwinn, Fugi, Raleigh and misc. Japanese stuff. CL is dead this time of year, but once spring arrives, I hope to move 2 -3 a week. Ain't easy to let go of your kids. Saddest of all is that I have not ridden more than 20 miles a week in the last year.
A conversation with another cv definite got me thinking about this.
Will you shrink the fleet, or grow the fleet, in 2015? Why, and how?
For myself, I plan to shrink the fleet. Last year I culled three bikes or frames. Gave one to a high school girl we know, sent another to a friend in NYC, sold a third to a forum friend. I did buy one bike last year. So that was n - 2. This year I plan to fix up a curbpicked Nishiki mixte and give it away, maybe sell a LL Bean branded Hardrock, sell another bike, and if I don't do something with the PX-10 project, it will go away too. So that is potentially n - 4. Why? Well, I am kind of tripping over bikes, and I would also like to open up room to get another bike or two that I really want - but I'm not in a rush for that.

Well...at least you admit it.
Not to judge, but by anyone's standards, that's a LOT of bicycles.
Best of luck on your de-acquisition efforts.
