What would you guys do?

I'm about ready to pull the trigger on a frame and fork that I have been lusting over for a long, long time. Its going to empty my bike fund for awhile. Meanwhile I have a newly built Eddy Merckx waiting to be ridden. Would you leave the Merckx alone and wait to build your Grail bike, or swap the parts immediately? I am planning on basically putting the same components on both bikes anyways. Thanks.

And this time I am not going to comment on whether I will keep it or sell it. Depends on how it rides. Thanks.

how much do you value the Eddy? Are the parts going to be period correct for the new frameset? If so, I would build that new one and put aside the Merckx frame for later.

Just to make it clear... Here is the Merckx in question, and the new frameset is a Pegoretti.

You'll probably know better once the grail is in hand. Put them next to each other, consider the work involved in swapping over the components, and decide which you want to ride more. The Merckx is a beaut', by the way. Curious about the grail bike.

...I was typing while you posted the above. Pegoretti, eh??

Leave the ***, take the canoli...er, i mean, if you want to ride the grail, switch stuff over and ride the heck out of it. You can always slowly move things back to the Merckx. The question is, which do you want to ride more?

Leave the Merckx alone. It's great the way it is. Build up the grail as you can over time and make it perfect.

Is the Pegoretti a NOS frame? I would build it with parts on hand as close the Merckx as you can and ride them both, then ecide to keep them both.

Veloce on a grail bike? It works fine, I know, but you might as well go all out since it's one of your grails.

Thats kinda my thought. I like the Veloce, looks and performs great. But I'm thinking Record for
the Pegoretti.

Sounds like you are answering your own question here...and, for a Pegoretti...wow...at least Record! Maybe even C Record??? Depends on how much you want to be "blingy!"

I guess I did, still gonna be hard with it just sitting in the garage. My OCD will not let it sit long. I'm going to tell my wife to hide the title to my Jeep. Springs around the corner, I don't need a vehicle.

I would not touch the EM and keep the Peg stored. You OCD will subside and rational thinking and planning will follow. Unless you must test drive it. I have a frame that needs painting but couldn't wait for a ride. Built it up and now I know, it has a coat of primer on it and the parts are in a box. May build it up differently later.

Ride the Merckx for a few weeks as built. Be patient with the grail. After that few weeks, move the parts over.

You'll know what to do afterwards.

Well you answered your own question but I was going to suggest the Spaghetti Legs method:

1) Buy the grail (Pegoretti) , telling yourself the whole time that you'll strip the parts from the Merckx and sell that frame to take the sting out. Also, don't forget to tell your spouse of this plan.

2) While the Pegoretti is in shipment, ride and enjoy the Merckx.

3) Decide that the decision to get rid of the Merckx was somewhat rash, and those Merckx frames aren't getting any cheaper and who knows how much one of those will cost in a few years.

4) Start shopping for parts for the Pegoretti (Yes, Record!)

BTW this method works with pretty much any bike, doesn't have to be a grail bike.

I would keep both of these, as the ride of a Pegoretti Fina is likely to be quite different.

I'd save your pennies and order up a box of Chorus from Ribble.

Now how did you know it was a Fina? I'm curious how it rides being aluminum. I really wanted a steel Pegoretti, but I quickly discovered that I cannot afford a steel Peg!

Inference.

Sure you can afford one.

Just save for a couple of years and place your order.

This is the one I want.....
