call for opinions: building Bianchi Reparto Corse EL OS

(believe it's '95-ish)

so the time has come to get this beauty a properly deserved treat: spring build!
while i see most of these on the web are either w Campy 9spd Record or DA74xx 8spd—both seems legit and beautiful IMO—
wondering a few things, also calling for you folks opinions/advises around.

1. did it come with specific gruppo, or just available as frameset? hard to find the correct catalog or info on this. sorry if my homework was not enough. not too much keen on a period-correct full resto, but why not considering it?

2. just for a preference sake, 9 or 10spd semi-modern Campy or 8spd DA? having a shimano-phobia, DA74XX is only exception i could go with and have a small part of bits in the bins. my eyes hurt looking at other shimano-designed stuffs. any suggestion based on your insights/experience?

3. also, would enormously appreciate any lead on a doable groupset at a good price—relatively good to the market price, i mean. thinking to put no more than 0.5k on this if possible. got a handlebar, stem, saddle etc. all i need is a bare groupset + wheels, i guess.

4. would 80's NR or SR group w DT shifters be a bad idea kinda diminishing its characteristics? have some NR bits in the bins w no use.

sorry for too many questions. just my brain's all over the place due to its Friday and thought to open more possibilities and ideas.

The only thing that sounds wrong to me is the NR group, but that doesn't mean it wouldn't be interesting to see. Do you have a nice set of wheels on hand? I would start there. Awesome frame!

A Celeste Bianchi is on my wish list. Congrats!
I have a nasty preference for Campy on Italian. I don't think I am alone. At the same time, I have a '91 Pinarello Montello with DA 8 spd that is a dream to ride. Experience with an equivalent Campy group is also on the wish list. Can't help you with price stuff. I really like the looks of early Chorus and Record Crank set, monoplane brakes, and record RD/FD. Clearly, brifters are a good choice too although DT index would work well too.

I think your gut about NR and SR is right. I too have some NR bits in bins, wondering what to do with them, but thinking of using them on early 80's frame sets.

Don't beat yourself up about asking too many questions. We love to go after them!

Alloy Chorus, 9 speed would be pretty cool. Black Eurus wheels to match the stem.

no wheels yet. and the budget for the wheels will set aside that 0.5k for the group realistically, i understand.
starting from the wheelset makes lots of pragmatic sense. thanks

and yeah, NR doesn't sound right, i know... @acoffin

Campagnolo 2015 Athena Silver 11 Spd Double Groupset at Ribble Cycles

Looks like a 95-96 . I think you could buy a complete bike , but I know that frame was also offered as a frame only. I have a 96 TSXUL I bought as a frame. I think original US retail on that frame was $950ish. TSXUL was $750.00

https://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/sp/roa...ir/campwhfr505

The Zonda is essentially a Fulcrum 3 at a better price.

I did mine in Shimano 25th anv group. Nitto stem and bars, brooks saddle and tape.

It is a very nice riding frame and I've had it built in about 4 or 5 different ways. Always a fav.

drat! I can't get the pics to load from this iPad

I second the 7700 series DA. I hear your preferences for Campy, but that group is the best shifting, longest lasting, most gorgeous set Shimano produced:

My opinion - DT shifters would look very weird on this. I also don't think you're getting a decent campy gruppo AND wheels for $500, but sometimes you get lucky.

To me...this bike is COOL! I love EL OS, and this looks like a very nice example of the finest 90s steel. I'd go slowly, save as I could, and put on 9sp alloy campy record. I do think this would be OK with Shimano, but I'm actually seeing 7700 more than 7400 for this. Personally I think 7700 was a better looking gruppo anyway, and the front trim is much better than 7400.

Here's an example of campy alloy 9sp:

Beautiful! I'm a fitness-for-purpose guy and I would not be able to avoid using a bike like that on any long summer ride. I would lean towards DA7400. Looks like you have a shimano BB already, the 8 speed stuff shifts flawlessly and you can do DT or STI. I would build a set of wheels with 7400 hubs or even 6400 hubs which are very functional, and the whole thing could fit into your budget. I like to see functional classic rides that are done with resourcefulness and not just with a credit card.

Look at the bay prices paid for groups for both 74xx and Chorus Alloy, they are close to $500 or under, take your pick.

MY BIKE!!

1. That is the last edition of that particular line. A TRUE REPARTO CORSA. You can tell the year(s) by how the forks, rear break bridge and rear triangle chrome masking look.

2. As for build. Mine started as Sachs 8, with semi areo cxp rims mounted to polished hubs. The new cpx rims just don't have the same look but you may be able to find some old ones with the yellow and red stickers on the cheep. (These bikes were frame set only)

3. Honestly I don't like the feel of gen 1 campy/sachs stuff (period correct) and would either go mid grade+ gen 2 or downtube.

4. The bike is a fun ride and head turner.

Do not overthink this. Campy vento wheels $180 with silver veloce non-compact group $360. Ribble prices as of now. Might even be able to get another 10% off that on the wheels. Just over $500 to your door.

Touchdown.

Don't be afraid to use Fulcrum 3s or 5s either.

Athena is the next stop up on the food chain.

More expensive, but also dirt cheap from Ribble.

Unless you've never used Campy Ergo shifters before.. then you might want to try them first somehow. The thumb shifter is not for everyone. I personally couldn't stand having to use that.

But it is for most!

When I built my ti Warbird, I thought about 6800 for ten minutes or so.

Then I just ordered the Athena and never looked back.

How can you stand having to raise your thumb up that high to reach the lever every. single. time. No way Jose

Which has happened to me.

Not to mention the premature rebuild.........

Which in many cases isn't part of the design.

A frame manufactured in Italy necessitates a campy gruppo imo.
