approximate cost to put together a vintage Campy group

Hi all,

I haven't posted this question under Appraisals because this isn't about specific parts, but hypotheticals. I know that a number of people around here have rebuilt bikes with Campy gear, and I'm trying to figure out what I should expect to spend if I go to eBay and try to gather components to put a group together for a build. I'm interested in vintage... doesn't need to be Super Record, but probably not Valentino.

And I'm hoping to get more than "follow this link to a full Campy NR set for $600" or "this one time I managed to pick up a set of Record front and rear derailleurs for $10 because the seller didn't know what he had and didn't list the maker." I'm just interested in people's ballpark ideas of what they'd expect to spend if they were trying to outfit a bike with decent vintage Campy stuff without overpaying or getting super lucky.

Thanks!

According to what the guys here said my NR triple groupset was worth you are looking anywhere from $300-500 for a used but in decent shape crank/bb/fd/rd/shifter group. Add $100-200 more for brake levers/calipers, another $100 for a headset and/or seatpost. All in all, $500-800 should get you fully Campy equipped. NOS obviously and obscenely more, used and abused should be less but Campy fanatics drive the prices up. Your best bet is wait for one off those lucky deals that fits your budget.

Somewhere in there....

It all depends on the condition. Very nice 9/10 parts will set you back over $1000 for a complete Super Record group if purchased piece by piece. 5/10 Nuovo Record parts might set you back $500 for the complete group but you'll pay for that in the end.

Do you want a 100% complete group down to the pedals, seat post and headset? A lot of money can be saved by skipping over those 3, a good SR headset is $150, seat post maybe $125 and another $75 for pedals. Good quality generics of all 3 of those will only cost $75 at best resulting in up to $300 in savings.

I sell a lot of Campy parts both as complete groups and as individual pieces. When it comes to Campy there's only name in town and its Record, Record and more. Record. Don't waste your money on anything else.

A different strategy is to buy a donor bike. Find something with the same threads and seat post size as what your current bike has... 27.0/British or 27.2/Italian or whatever. Buy the bike, strip the parts and sell the frameset to recoup costs the sell the parts you removed to recoup even more money.

Here's a data point: I recently paid about $450 for a Pat 80 SR RD, plus the correct DT shifters, post-CSPC FD, crankset, BB with new bearings, brakeset with new-ish pads, new brake levers on good brake mount bases with new (likely reproduction) hoods, and a good headset.
Everything in excellent condition, required nothing on my end except to install and adjust. Was sourced by CicliCorsa in Bergamo, Italy, excellent people to work with.
Later picked up a very nice pair of skewers to go with a pair of correct era Record wheels I already owned, and a pair of excellent crankset caps for about $100 shipped.
Looks awesome, shifts well, makes for a nice L'Eroica ride:

Prices for Nuovo Record on ebay have gone crazy. But if you hunt and peck, and take your time, you can sometimes knock down good looking parts for not too much. I would start here though. Put an ISO thread in that section. Part by part if you have to. Prices on parts here will probably be better than ebay if you can find guys willing to part with them.

I agree with all the above. The 'donor bike' strategy is always a good one, but it's a "catch as catch can" proposition. If you want an all Campy NR bike in your size etc, start looking for an all campy NR bike in any size, especially one that hasn't been well maintained. And keep an eye out for any old random POS with some of the right parts.

I have sold nice pedals anywhere from $100 to $150, the same with nice seat posts and hubs. So just those four pieces can be pushing $400 or more. Crankset, brake calipers and levers, and headsets bring good $$ too. Add derailleurs and shift levers, and the $$ goes that much higher. Depending on how complete the group is, its condition and the model (Campy has a ton of different models), $600 could be a good deal. And even some of the lower Campy groups bring good money. I had a bike that came with Campy Triomphe, I was really surprised what that Triomphe stuff brought. Again, CONDITION IS EVERYTHING!

Most full group sets I see are not full, at least by my definition.

You lucked out on the $10 set. Don't count on lucking out on the remaining bits.

In the thrifty world, the only way I buy Campy groups is in the form of a complete bike. I can typically find a complete bike with Campy parts for less than what the parts are worth, sometimes MUCH less. And often those Campy bits come on frankenbikes, that have some Campy parts, but not complete. And one key to finding a donor bike is being agnostic on size. I could care less what size the bike is when I am buying it for the parts.

I just finished accumulating a Super Record group, mostly through EBay. The parts that will end up on the bike cost me about $310 including shipping. This doesn't include wheels/hubs or a headset. Saddle stem and bars also not included. I ended up spending more than that howver, accumulating some extra parts, finding a duplicate part in better condition etc. Costs for small parts will add up, like dust caps for cranks, brake hoods, so you'll get more bang for your buck getting he little stuff in good condition included with your other parts. I enjoyed the hunt, trying to find the best part at best price, but if you're in a hurry and it's not your thing, then I don't think shelling out $600 for a full, good condition gruppo is out of line. It's a how much is your time worth vs if you're in a hurry it's not a hobby philosophy.

I accumulated this group over about 3 months. My original plan to strip a group off another bike backfired as I got a Moser with SR that happened to fit and unfortunately rides really nicely, so ended up keeping it! If you go that route don't even look at bikes in your size!

I agree with all of this...but...one other route that you might consider is buying a grouppo on eBay...often the grouppo costs less than the individual parts...and you get most, if not all, of what you want need...and...since it is often someone that took the parts off of a single bike, the sizes are all correct for each other.

The donor bike is often the best way...but it truly depends on condition.

I am currently trying to source Campy C-Record...in very pristine condition...8-9/10...it seems for that group...in that condition...I am going to have to consider $1000...whew!

Unrelated question, what kind of bar tape is that? I really dig that deep red color.

Have you priced new campy stuff lately? It makes the price of vintage gear look almost reasonable.

Why yes I have.

I was able to pick up a complete Athena groupset, a Fulcrum 5 cx wheelset, a Nitto Pearl, Nitto Noodles, a Cambium, King cages, Fizik tape, a Nitto s83 seatpost and 4 inner tubes for less than a grand. In addition, I ordered a set of Gravel Kings for another $60.

Deals galore on ebay, Ribble and the forums if you are patient.

It's costly if fanatical on condition or piece at a time. I also get the whole collectable thing, but for the premium paid for choice condition, I'd rather just buy and experience another bike. So for condition, it doesn't bother me but must be mechanically good and not too worn.

Much of the older Campagnolo NR stuff wears out far sooner than most but they are lightweight and look great. Laugh you may but for robust and good performance on early 60's, I like the steel Velox. $30 can get one setup in a Valentino or Velox shift group.

For a current project its been a lot of patience but I'm getting close to finishing up a 70's Nuovo Record parts of group, average condition, non-match year of production, net $110. Consist of N. Record front and rear derailleurs, DT shifters, pedals, post, Super Record hubs.

Yet on another complete bike purchase, an entire 70's NR group (less crankset) was on it - paid $100 bike + 230 shipping (yes, I know).

That's my range for 60's-70's. I don't have any 80's or 90's Campy.

Icepick, that's red Sella Italia leather wrap over red Nashbar gel. Super comfy!

Also forgot to mention in my, prior post that the price included the correct seatpost. Note the full price paid, which I think was pretty good, today might even be less given the Euro-Dollar exchange rate.

Out of my league with some of the 'high rollers' (pun eh'?), but I'm always on the lookout for the shining heavy Velox stuff

BTW: Has anyone lately priced vintage C. Record NOS in the box lately? Yikes! Then there's the little bits, like 5 speed shifters, clamps, cable guides. Nutz prices.

----and then this was just listed on CR and sold $300. Seemed like a nice package of goodies.

One piece at a time will cost more than buying the whole groupset at once, plus expose you to more sellers who may or may not be honest.

I've move 4 or 5 complete SR & NR groups (everything except cables, rims, tires, chain) in very good condition for $450-600 over the last 3 years.

I've picked up full NR bikes for $250, this is by far the best way but they come up infrequently and you have to act quick. I live in Switzerland, the population is dense, the market is hot, and the worse the ad/pictures the better the deal.

I'm a sleazy/slimy flipper, or in USA english a full-blooded capitalist.

As a reference, I can sell complete SR groups for $900 w/ free shipping all day long. Can I make more parting out the group? Yes, but its a lot more work for me. A complete group is 1 ad and large flat box. Buyers can save $150+ on shipping alone by purchasing a complete group.

I'd look for a donor bike....

I basically came up with a complete NR groupset without spending anything. I have had plenty of bikes that have come into my possesion that have mixed groupsets. Some bikes have been cheap and not exactly top of the line but had a nice component here or there. I was able to put together the groupset in a year or so. If you have the time this could work for you. If not, get out the wallet.

I'd look for a donor bike....
Looks like I got my SR-equipped Colnago Super at a significant discount!

What's the going rate for pantographed late 80s Chorus groupsets?

I agree with the donor bike approach. I will buy a whole bike just for one part, or for the wheels, or crank, whatever. Then sell off the stuff I don't need, keep the cool unexpected treasures that just about every bike has, and stock-up, trade, repurpose the rest.

I bought a beat up PX-10 last summer and ended up just keeping the cool Simplex skewers. Sold the frame and parts and pocketed a few dollars to boot.

For a Campy group buying a Campy equipped bike or two at a reasonable price and harvesting the parts is the way to go.

50% of a pantographed Record group... Depends what its pantographed with....Colnago DeRosa etc are worth more than lesser marques.

I'll bet we could get you up a Record group here between the responders so far.

How much moolah you got?
