Modern compact crank with standard freewheel and chain.

Hi,

A few years ago I bought what appears to be a 90's vintage Schwinn LeTour frame. The rear drop-out is for a 130 mm axle and I was able to find a 130mm Phil Wood rear hub for a threaded freewheel. I want to use one of the many Regina America 6-sp freewheels I have on this bike. I'm able to make up everything from a 17-12 to 31-14, the latter of which is perfect for touring with a 50-34 compact crank.
Rear derailleur is a Suntour Cyclone.

I bought a bunch of Tara 6-7 speed chains (Nashbar Close-out) several years ago which work well on three other bikes with
Regina standard freewheels. One of these bikes has a Mavic 53-39. The compact crank I have is Shimano FC-5800 which I had
planned to use on my race bike for races with long steep climbs, but never got around to making the switch. Now I want to use it
on the LeTour. The Shimano crankset was probably set up to use with a 9-speed cassette. While this crank, the Tara chain and the Regina freewheel appear to work well together, I'm concerned that a problem I'm overlooking could crop up while out on the road and away from civilization.

Comments from someone who's actually put something similar together would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

sewupnut

Naw you should be fine. People even had better results using higher geared chains on 6-7 speed setups. I think once you get to 11, 10 or maybe 9 speed chains on older cranks or freewheels you might have some issues with the narrower chain.

If you are really worried, measure the cog to cog spacing on your freewheels and of the crankset. The shim the inner ring inwards or outer ring outwards to match. You can get 10mm inner diameter shims from an industrial supply company like McMaster.

Personally, if it works, I'd leave it alone.

Thanks for the input.

All:

Thanks for the input. My intuition gained from years of staying up all night before a race to make sure my bike was
perfect tells me this should work fine.
