@fietsbob I didn't know you play mandolin. Nice. Who is your favorite mandolin player? John Reischman is my favorite, and has been for years, as far back as the Good Ol' Persons days.

You could also go with a 9 speed cassette and remove the largest cog. Then get 9 speed downtube shifters (possibly from a bar end shifter if that's all that's available). Two parts and you can run 8 speed on your 7 speed free hub.

Man, if you hate the selection available in cassettes, you'll really hate the freewheel selection. Seriously, Shimano HG50 7 speed cassettes are available in 13-23. Order them online if you must. If it's too much to pay, try a Miche cassette out.

Shimano HG50 7 Speed 13 23T Cassette | eBay

Here's a HG 50 13-23 that you can get to Kiev for $44 total. If you're patient, I'm sure you'll find a similar one from the Eurozone.

8-speed DT shifter and 8-speed cassette seems like better option.

Freewheel isn't such a hassle since it is meant to be used with friction shifters which are compatible with pretty much everything. If you're talking about 7-speed freewheels, selection is rather poor, that's true.

Shipping cost is a little bit steep. Anyway, it's an option to consider. Thanks!

Good, thank you!

The last freewheel(s) I bought were DNP Epoch 7 spd and 8 spd freewheels.
For 7 spd, there are 11-28 to 11-32 options available.

I didn't like all of the wide jumps in the 11-28, and eventually jumped to 9s with a cassette. My friction shifters don't care how many cogs I use, although I am close to the maximum range.

The DNP Epoch uses a larger, and slightly wider freehub body than many other manufactures, and thus they only work with wide gearing, and may require slightly different spacing than other freewheels.

My new build, I put on an 11-32, 9s cassette because I had it and it was cheap. The nice thing is that I can do most of my riding using a single chainring, although I'll probably eventually replace it with something like 11-25 or 11-26. Anyway, I've started getting accustomed to a bit more relaxed gearing

Sometimes it's nice to ride slowly on light gear like 42/17, sometimes you feel like Incredible Hulk, spinning 52/13 like nobody's business. Sometimes, like I did today, you ride on heavy gear just to end this all as soon as possible, because another 30 minutes on the road are unbearable.

Though, I've noticed I'm on 52/17 most of the time (on flats) and I use front deraileur more often than the rear one. Considering another bike (singlespeed or fixie) with exact gearing, but that's another story.
