some say he was the original designer of cinelli's pope handlebars, and that he plans to ride a brand new bike to L'Eroica, and get away with it...

Dude, don't get me wrong, I'm all about vintage steel - that's why I'm here. I'm just layin' down the logic for Riv pricing. I have looked, but have no plans to buy one in the future. Too much vintage steel to save from the landfill!! Surely GP is down with that.

@Dave Cutter, go for it! I have an early 80's Ross 5-speed and love it. Full chrome fenders and a handlebar basket even. I want a mirror but just haven't gotten around to it yet. Jus rode it 8 blocks to the local pub for a burger and beer.

Awesome!

As much as it goes against the "Grant philosophy" that's a cool bike.

If I've got rack mounts, I mount racks.

Ditto. Surely there are plenty of us that read Grant's reasoning for lugged, steel frames and wonder why one doesn't just buy a vintage frame in good shape and be way ahead of the game. I've got several frames hanging in my workshop ready for some new brazed bits and a powder coat that, in total, cost less than one Sam Hillborne.

That is profit. It is a third thing. Only the business owner can determine what is an acceptable margin. There are even reasons to accept a negative margin.

But price is still determined by what the market will bear. Cost has no bearing on price.

Price is determined by projections of what the market will bear within a given desired production model and within the context of other stakeholders. If I can sell 5 widgets with a $5 gross margin, that may be preferable to selling 2 widgets at $10 gross margin.

Production levels influence cost only. They have no bearing on price. Unless of course you consider the value of "exclusivity". That is an exception to the rule and does not have significance to production items. Production quantities are only limited to capacity and ramp-up. Grant could sell 1,000 or 10,000 Hilborne frames. The $1,300 price would not change.

Now back to our regular programming . . . .

When Grant Petersen talks, people ignore E.F. Hutton.

I just read an article about electronically controlled front and rear shocks. To go along with electronic shifting, hydraulic disk brakes and a plastic frame.

At some point I expect to see a motor added to either the crank or another part of the drive train in an article that tries to convince me that it is still a bicycle and not a Moped.

There are some things that I won't ever agree on with Grant but I do appreciate his philosophical view of cycling to the extent that I know it.

I read this over the past few days on a whim!

I find it easy and enjoyable to read. I agreed with many of the sentiments, and GP's bike philosophy. Honestly, when I tried to get into biking for transportation over a decade ago it didn't stick. I realized there was too much "friction" in me riding. I had to wear special clothes, get a special bag and risk getting dirty.

When I got my bike about 18 months ago, it was a very different sort of bike. I was inspired by those "cycle chic" people. They all had their normal stuff on and I thought...that look like my kind of bike riding. This time around it stuck. Now as the months passed, I decided it was time to remove more friction in my bike riding (around town). Now I am working up a new bike that should have better positioning and gearing. But still keeps the practical benefits I enjoy about my current bike.

I like how GP espouses bags, racks, dynamos and fenders. I disagree on his stance on the internal gears.

I am probably getting a litlle sick of all paleo all the time.

I am crawling through "Just Ride" as I have it downloaded to my phone. I get in about 20 minutes of reading two-three times a week (while I pick-up my granddaughter at school). The short chapters and brief writing style is perfect for the phone/reader format. Nice bite sized chunks.

I like his simple way of looking at "unracer" cycling. My rural upbringing and now advanced age... has shielded me from the race-side of cycling. So I relate well to much that he writes about.

But some of his ideas on cycling clothing... are best thought of as humorous commentary. Seasoned with that grain of salt he recommends in the foreword. Or else... we should be looking for long-sleeved, cowboy styled, seersucker, summer wear cycling jerseys. I prefer to chuckle at the idea. Knowing full well that my normal daily "kit" is no less ridicules looking. And no better suited for the style of riding I do.

In the spirit of "Just ride" I squeezed the tires (to check pressure) on my rain bike (it has campus-style pedals) this morning. Then I threw my leg over the bike and went for a short ride. It was cold and I wore the sweat pants I happened to have on, and a hoodie, with casual slip-on shoes. I did wear a helmet.

I had stuck a mirror on the bike for just this reason. I didn't put in my contacts lens or wear cycling glasses. I just wore the glasses I had on. I didn't bother with a water bottle ether. I decided to not even wear cycling gloves... that was the step too far... my hands got cold.

It was a nice ride. Quick, short, fun (cold) and a tad too windy. But much better than no ride at all.
