5-23: 11.5 (Group Ride)
5-23: 4.6 (w/ Wife)
-----------
MtD: 116.5

Goal Acccomplished!!!!!!

I did my first group ride, yesterday. I did well, except for one hill. It was short, only .3 mi, but it was steep (between 7%-10%), and we started from a standing stop. I got about half-way up, but had to slow down for another rider, and the loss of momentum caused me to have to stop, and walk the rest of the way up the hill. I definitely need to work on my climbing skills.

My wife is going further on her rides, because we're riding to a local greenway, which is much flatter than the road around our apartment complex. There is a nice little hill to climb on the way back, though.

To continue my progress towards achieving my monthly goal, I decided to try out a group ride with the Massapequa Bike Club. Since this was my first group ride, I had lots to learn and wasn't sure of my abilities so I joined the 'C' group. Luckily I had another new rider with me on that ride , Jim. The club had a nice small group go out for that group. The other groups were HUGE!! The 'A' and 'B' groups were very large. I think I recall a 'AA" also and many in the gorups were fully kitted up in spandex in the upper groups but there were also plenty in what I would call more 'street clothes so whatever you were comfortable in was acceptable attire. I came in spandex shorts and a heavier short sleeve jersey and windproof jacket. It was about 50 degrees going to a high in the upper 60's so I was OK. Some were in tights and some went so far as to have a balaclava on I want to thank Luis, Marie and Lisa (can't forget their names since it is like my daughter's Maria Lisa), Jim, Joe (I think) and Howie. For a first ride it was a calm ride taken at an easy pace. I decided to ride the 4 miles from home to the meeting place at Bethpage library so I appreciated the pace. It also allowed me to have enough energy to ride all the way back to the library and express my appreciation before turning for home even though we had ridden past my house on the return trip. They did a great job of helping us learn the ropes as far as hand signals and riding in a group. It was a fun ride and the conversations were welcoming and fun. Definitely a fun bunch that makes you want to return each week. I think I will try a faster group next time just to see where I place. Luis had us come to a nice hill and offered anyone wanting to ride up to meet at the stop at the top so Jim and I decided to double time it up to the top. It was a nice hill and got me winded. Felt good to run up it. Our ride went North to Locust Valley and on the way we saw several other bike groups and some from other clubs. They sounds like a swarm of bees cranking up the road along side us as they passed.

From my experience, I would definitely recommend anyone to try joining a club ride. Lots more to learn and meet great people. That MBC adn the 'C' group for making my first group ride a pleasure.

I ended the day with 39.6 miles.

5/19 12.23mi 377ft. - Lunch Ride
5/19 31.23mi 1161ft. - Tues group ride
5/20 29.24mi 1332ft. - Wed. group, free beer
5/24 76.87mi 2260ft. - Chippewa Valley Century, abandoned after blowing out a sidewall bad enough that even with a boot it was bulging 10 miles later. I was going good until then, on pace for a 5:30 solo century. Oh, well.
5/25 33.53mi. 1545ft. - Put on a brand new tire, 25 miles later cut the sidewall on this one, too. I R LUCKY.

MTD 550.57mi. 20048ft.

Definitely not making this month's goal, probably missing by 100 miles. Bad weather and family medical emergencies shouldn't happen.

I am going to shoot for 250 miles both outside and on the trainer.

5/2: 26.27mi - Swiped the wife's mountain bike with slicks... I hate her seat...
5/3: 11.76mi - Wife's bike again... butt hurts even worse now...
5/5: 3.7mi(t) - Felt like I was cycling through molasses...
5/10: 11.98mi - Sat group ride rained out
5/13: 4.4mi(t) - Don't ask...
5/16: 12.0mi - Memphis in May Sprint Tri
5/18: 20.42mi
5/20: 4.4mi(t) - Interval attempt... too ambitious
5/23: 31.78 - Group Ride, complete long route
5/24: 28.57

MTD: 155.28/250+mi - I will break 200 in a month for the first time... but 250 seems a little out of reach now.

Didn't do my training ride this morning, as yesterday was a big day for me mileage wise, so I decided to use today as a recovery day. But I needed a haircut, and since the place wasn't too far out of my normal ride, I decided to bike there. I don't know whether it's good or bad, but the extra .5 mi had a hill in it that left me more out of breath than normal. I had to really spin to finish it. Then after running errands with my wife, we had a more leisurely ride this evening.

You'll probably hit 150 for this month, which means that next month's goal should be 200!

That's what I'm think about myself, also.

We don't "walk". We 'cross-train'
