Stupid morality question, or is it?

I ordered these two helmets online that I would like to try, I mean beyond putting them on for fit. I wanna go on a 20+ mile ride with both, afterwards, return the one that I don't like. Would that be wrong, or unethical because I would have sweated in the one I'm returning?

Depends on the return policy. If they stipulate satisfaction guaranteed, 30 day no questions asked or something along those lines, I'd say no, but I'd tell them what you did so they can choose. If not, then I'd say yes. Where did you order them from?

This is Competitive Cyclists policy:

[h=4]100% GUARANTEED RETURNS[/h] We guarantee your total satisfaction and offer a world-class returns policy. New,unused gear can be returned at any time for a full refund. Used gear must be returned within 30 days of delivery for store credit.
  • New, unused gear must be returned in the condition you received it and with the original box and/or packaging, including manufacturer tags where applicable.
  • Used and undamaged gear, bikes, or bike frames will be issued store credit in the form of credits applied to your Competitive Cyclist account. We will not accept the return of products damaged due to negligence or abuse.
See our full policy page for more details regarding warranties, exchanges, shippingfor returns, and the return of new and used gear and bikes.
In this case, I'd say that as long as you return it as used for store credit, then you're fine. If you return it as new, unused, then I don't think highly of you as a person and really hope I never get the helmet you returned.

I don't buy helmets online, only from bike shops, so I don't care what you do, as I'm not going to get your used sweaty helmet.

Yeah, that was my first thought... but don't think my cap will catch all of the sweat...

Here is Performance's return policy...

We stand behind every product we sell. If an item does not meet your expectations, simply return it. We guarantee your money back for a full year. After one year, we’ll provide an exchange, repair, or store credit to ensure you have the product that meets your needs. If you’ve lost your receipt, we’ll provide a store credit at our current price.
I may be safe returning to them if I like the one from Amazon better... I normally buy from LBS but none of the LBS's in my area had the Lazer and no one had the Garneau in my XL size, yeah I have big head... LOL!!

My experience with helmets... you can tell trying them on if they will be comfortable... no need to ride with it. You might check with your LBS if they have loaner helmets to try; many do. Shops struggle to make a profit; I would try not to eat into it by returning a used helmet when there is no need...

Yeah, this. My company sells auto racing helmets and those have a more complex fit than a bike helmet and there really isn't a situation where a helmet needs to be worn for a very long time to judge fit. I tell my customers to sit on the couch with it on for 10 minutes and see what it feels like then.

A bicycle helmet would be even easier to fit (it is so much lighter) and much easier to sit on the couch for an hour and see how it feels. No need to get it all sweaty by wearing on a ride, you will gain no additional information this way.

Little bit of a rant - nothing is free. The company that sells Performance the helmets expects to get paid, and Performance employees and vendors expect to get paid. The cost of that helmet that gets returned after a year of being worn is factored into the pricing the rest of us pay for everything. Don't get me started on Amazon's BS - most likely they are pushing the costs of that worn return off on a small company and even if they eat the cost themselves, *they*do*not*consistently*make*a*profit.

But, to be clear, I am not on my high horse about ordering multiple helmets, trying them on and returning the ones you don't like - I just have an issue with wearing one for a 20 mile ride and then returning it.

How could someone even ask such a question.

Let me turn it around

Do you want my sweaty cycling shorts? My balls only smell a little.

I lost 60 pounds and have half a dozen stinky bibs and short that need a new home. No charge? Only the Descente quality short are free. I am returning the Assos for a credit.

Isn't there a thread for that? Or is that just jerseys.

Yeah, my concern with was with air flow, hence me wanting to try it on a ride... With the Giro helmet I have now, I get VERY hot, very little airflow... This was the first helmet that I brought when I purchased my first bike a few years ago, when I didn't know what I didn't know... At that time, I just took the lowest cost helmet that fit in the color I wanted..LOL. It has served me well over the years, but now that cycling is a major part of my lifestyle I want a better helmet. This time I know what I want. One criteria is better is airflow, again, hence the reason I wanted to ride with one on.

Well actually, I don't want them but I've seen several posts where people are passing down and/or selling their worn bibs & jerseys, so there is market for your bibs and shorts.

I hear you, that's why I asked the question. The business model for shopping online with so many companies is "try it" and if you don't like send it back, no harm, no foul. The intent was never to keep the helmet no more than one or two days because I do 20 miles 3 evenings a week after work.

BTW, I received the Garneau helmet this evening. I DID NOT ride with it, but the fit felt very good. The vents on this sucker are huge!!! Can't wait to get the Lazer helmet to compare.. Also I've been convinced to NOT go on a 20 mile ride to checkout the ventilation..

When I get a helmet that I don't really like, it goes on a nail on the garage wall and I use it for guests. Maybe you could keep your extra helmet for a loaner, or if one has more airflow than the other, one could be a summer helmet and the other a winter helmet.

One thing about looking for a helmet with a lot of air vents, it really depends on how much hair you have. I'm losing my hair because of a medical condition and I had to swap out my helmet with the vents for one that has nearly none, because I kept getting sunburns on my scalp where the vents were.

Hmm didn't think of that. Since I recently started shaving my head, this may be an issue. Btw, I don't need 3 three helmets, my old helmet & a new one will be sufficient to have an extra one for a guest...

^^ This. In the worst case, if you need more than five minutes to decide, just wear it while doing stuff at home. There's no need to sweat in it.

I disagree. Liking A more than B doesn't necessarily mean that B does not meet your expectations.

.
You can research this online... no need to ride with the helmet. Basically the airflow goes with cost... helmets which cost over $100 have better air flow than helmets that cost $40. Not rocket science. If you check whatever manufacturers specifications, the air flow is generally discussed. I generally ride with Giro helmets - the one I like costs about $140. Has great airflow. If you are only willing to pay $50, expect less air flow. Air flow is the single one issue as to why some helmets are more expensive...
