I'll try to go for 1 mile of climbing (5280').

Right now, I'm at 3376', using the elevation gain on Strava. Of course, I wonder how it gets its information, as the exact same rides don't have the same elevation gain.

My take... more up rides than out flat rides is a good thing. Get that average over 50'/mi

On Flat Long Island, I need to ride a distance just to find a hill with 200 ft elevation. They are rather far between. The best ride I know of will be the one on June 28th where there will be over 3100 ft gain over a 66 mile course. That is only 46.9 ft gain/mile. Sorry, not sure I can do much better without moving!!!

Between the glacier dumping the pile of dirt we now call Long Island here and the corn and potato farmers plowing it over added to My Levitt and My Jones building suburbia, I think they flattened the hell out of it.

350 miles and 14,626' of climbing so far this month. Tour of the CA Alps (AKA "Death Ride" w/ 125 miles & 15k climbing) coming up quick in mid-July. I need to get in a couple long rides with 7-10k of climbing before then for a little more conditioning.

Wow that is going to be tough. There is a ride here a few members did that was 100 miles with 10k' in climbing. Good luck.

6-12 36 miles with 2684'
6-18 30 miles with 2828'

We're all amateurs compared to these guys.

Trans Am Bike Race 2015

Unsupported bike tour across the US. They started in the Pacific Northwest last week. The leader just crossed the Mississippi River today.

Take a look at the elevation chart, especially for the Colorado area.

The key is to have a massive hill half a mile from your house (7-9-13% with a nice 6% false summit about 100 yards long.) Then you can go up it over and over again, for 1,040ft of gain in less than 13 miles. And the elevation graph looks like a bandsaw blade. Now I am no hill climber by nature, but I figure if I want to get any better at it I should just go ahead and do it. Averaging 81ft/mi, and about 1,225ft/hr, if I had thought my heart could stand to go around again. But I didn't, so I didn't.

This is the Highland Circuit Race course from the Redlands Bicycle Classic, which was about 2 months ago-- and as if I need more to remind me that I'm a normal human, I did it five times in 50 minutes, and felt pretty solid about it. Still do. The 1st place men's time in the Classic was 2:07:40 to do it twenty times, at an average lap speed of 27.31mph. I'll never hit a major league fastball, and I'll never manage that circuit at 20mph, much less 27mph. And I'm absolutely OK with that.

Yep - I live right at the base of this hill, and have to go at least part way up the hill to get out of my street: https://www.strava.com/segments/3797866

1.6 miles, 450 feet of elevation change. I'm at 21,555 for the month so far, so if I limit myself to repeats on that thing, I'll need to do 18.7 repeats to get me to 30k for the month. I wonder if I hate my life enough to try that.
