inexpensive clyde hubs

I'm looking for recommendations. I would like to find some inexpensive hubs for a new wheel build. Road bike, 36 spoke, disc brakes. To fit into a Giant Defy. Front and rear. I have found some for $300 a pop, but thats a bit too much for me. I'm looking for some good hubs for less. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Shimano, anything from Deore up (going that you have a 10 speed 135mm old) if you have 11 speed, getting 36 hole hubs is hard (I've been looking for a while now, apart from White Industries, there's not a lot out there)

I have the 11 speed. White industries is the cheapest I've found so far. found some more expensive ones though. Still, the whites are going to be on the order of $500 for a set, which is quite a bit for me.

Shimano 105 hubs. Best bang for buck there is. White Industries are awesome hubs (that's what I have), but they're a bit saltier than 105. 36H 105 hubs would be as low as I would go though. About $150 for front and rear together. Step up to Ultegra for about $200

Road bike means 130mm spacing vs 135mm for mountain bike.
Front is 100mm on both, so I assume you could use a "mountain" hub on the front.
I have no experience with disc brakes, but "assume" the disc is in the same location in regards to the spacing.
I'm not sure how well that would work on a "mountain" rear hub with the spacing shortened by 5mm.

WHICH Defy do you have that has disc brakes?

I cant find a 105 hub in disc for the 11 speed. I have 105 everywhere else, so if I can find that it sounds like a winner.

All road discs are now 135mm, there were a few 130mm OLD rears a few years back, but in recent years, all road discs have gone to the MTB spec of 135mm, MTB's in the mean time are starting to move to 142mm and other specs

Don't know if they have what you need, but I use NovaTec in all my builds. about $100 each hub. I get them through Bob Dopolina, member here on BF.

Shimano 10 speed hubs will fit 11 speed cassettes as well.

Exactly. To my knowledge, there are no Defys with disc brakes. OP should check into that before he makes a costly mistake.

BikeHubStore.com

I've built several wheels using their hubs and I've had zero complaints.

Giant's website has many Defy models with disc brakes. I'm assuming he's got a new bike, especially since he has 11-speed 105.

Actually all new carbon Defys have disc brakes. The aluminum ones will be all disc soon, apparently.

EDIT: Sorry I see you already got corrected here!

In this case it's prowheelbuilder that is wrong -- or at least incomplete.

Shimano 10sp do not fit 11sp.*
Campy 10sp DO fit campy 11 sp.

* the exception is some Mavic 10sp shimano compatible hubs that fit an 11sp cassette.

For what hub? They list hubs as being 10 and 11 speed compatible. These are 11 speed hubs.

Most. Not all.
Trek uses 142mm rear spacing on their Domane Disc thru axle, and the same upgrade is being made to the Boone and Crockett disc CX bikes, switching from 135mm QR to 142mm thru axle.

Ok, but the point was that 130mm isn't used anymore for disc, and was only for a very short time in the first place, for standards, ask a question today, get an answer tomorrow, and the next day there will be a new standard making the answer incorrect.

So many standard are in flux at the moment as well, currently road discs use Post Mount and 9mm front hubs, both these are almost certain to be obsolete by the time MY2017 bikes come out, with the introduction of Flat Mount and probably 12 Thru axle.

For Trek, they have had some unique standard for their MTB rear ends which the industry hasn't followed, but they are big enough to go it alone if they want.
