I can still DO IT!

Read a long time ago in "Bicycling" a good way to burn bodyfat was to get up in the morning, have a cup of coffee, and ride without eating. Seems your blood sugar will be low, thus more app to burn bodyfat.

I don't know if it's true or not,

But at 60 years old, at 2pm I went out for my ride without eating anything today. Felt great, and had a great ride!

Heh. The first thing that popped into my mind was "Since when is 2 p.m. the morning?"

If I am riding 20 miles or less, I never eat anything in the morning before I go... I do carry water bottles and a protein bar in case I feel I need a little something on the ride. Oh, and in Houston in the summer, I would never leave at 2 pm... I am usually back from my ride by noon, for rides of 20 miles or less by 9 or 9:30... don't care for the high heat and humidity.

I hope you're at least taking water for the hot, humid SC weather.

I learned over the years I can ride 30 miles on energy reserves alone. Maybe 5-10 miles further on empty before I end up "bonking". I should point out that much like driving your car, repeatedly letting your body's "fuel tank" get down that low can be dangerous to your overall health.

The ratio of fat to carbs (glycogen) burned is more a function of intensity than availability of sugar. A comfortable, steady aerobic pace favors burning fat while once you push into an anaerobic zone, you start burning through the glycogen at an increased rate. In an all-out sprint you are burning glycogen almost exclusively. IMHO people don't really understand that it isn't whether you burn fat or carbs during your exercise that counts when trying to lose weight, it is the caloric deficit at the end of the day.

Always carry water, unless I forget the bottle!

I always ride on a nearly empty stomach. But, I definitely take in some sugars and caffeine while doing it. 100-calorie gels every 45 minutes while on the bike is my new kick. It seems to work very well.

I left the house this morning to get a couple hills in... didn't have any coffee, didn't eat anything and didn't bring anything to eat either. I dunno... it must be mental because the whole ride, all I could think about was a clif bar. I felt a little run down too, so who knows. I did recall this thread from yesterday though, just didn't realize you were not eating till that late.

I'd go insane if I waited till 2pm to eat - are you doing one of those once-a-day diet strategies?
