July 2015 5000' climbing plus goal thread

I guess it just never occurred to me that I live someplace quite hilly. I can easily do rides of 150ft/mi without getting further than 2 miles from my house, and have multiple streets with 13%+ grades. And as I'm trying to do more, shorter rides (as my average ride was getting up to around 35 miles, making it feasible for me to ride only 3 days a week due to time restrictions) I've started a new plan I can 10/1000, where do 1000' of climbing and 10 miles, trying to get as absolutely close to both numbers as possible. This morning picked up 10 miles and 1063ft (forgot about the dips on the final descent,) bringing me to a total of 7,504 for the month, well shy of my usual monthly average, but I'm also way under on miles. Frankly just hoping to hit 300 miles this month.

9219 feet so far for July and I'm 17% of the way in that Giro climbing challenge all without intentionally tackling a single hill! We'll see how close I am at the half way mark and that will maybe convince me to go do some hills for the rest of July.

Got in my 2nd ride of the month after 2 weeks only had 2 hours, but @jimincalif gave me a nice new route to ride so I managed to get in 2760' of climbing in. I really need to get more time on the bike because if I can maintain 2500' or more per ride I would be in pretty good shape!
7-9 20 miles and 2250'
7-15 24 miles and 2760'
Total 44 miles and 5010'

Well, 245 miles and a hilly neighborhood... a 12 mile ride around the neighborhood usually nets me about 1,000 so as you can imagine, it doesn't take long to get some feet. I hit the river trail for 22 miles yesterday and THAT was about 1,000 feet, just getting there. Ah, what a blessing. It caused me to quit cycling for about 10 years though, until I discovered the joys of a compact crank.

Why average speed is a metric I don't pay any attention to:
Average of 189ft/mi. Unfortunately for my legs, the last 4 miles of the climb picked up over 1,700 feet-- well over 400ft/mi. I stopped looking at the speedo, as I just knew I was going slooooooow. Ride finished with 4,636ft, bringing the MTD to 12,140ft. Hopefully, Saturday's ride will be a little less... climby.

Last Saturday completed my one and only organized ride, Tour of the CA Alps. 125 miles and 15k climbing in 11 hours. There was a bit of suffering involved. The state highway department ground off the asphalt on the last couple of miles of road leading up to the last mountain pass. Very rough going when you are fatigued from a long day in the saddle.
I'm 54% in the Giro Climbing challenge and with a couple thousand feet of hills in my daily commute should be able to complete the challenge in the next couple weeks.

I wanted to ride this weekend, but the first time it's ever happened I actually couldn't due to heavy rain...

According to the method they (apparently) use for the Tour de France, it was a Cat2-- I picked up 2,030ft in a single grade. They don't look at length, elevation, or grade, just how much altitude is gained before you start going back down again. I'm going to continue looking at avg. ft/mi climbed as it's a more useful metric to me. The Strava segment that covers the climb is also intensely disheartening-- it looks at the total time, not the moving time, so my avg. speed was 4mph by the segment calculation, but actually closer to 6mph based on moving speed. Hey, I gotta stop sometimes. That's just how it is.
I managed to skirt the rain for at least part of the weekend, only got into a little drizzle, got in about 28 miles on Saturday-- Sunday it rained pretty much non-stop all day.

Got in ~3,000' on the bike last night.
0' ru**i*g for @TrojanHorse so that number is still stuck at 3,273' for the month

If you go to training and select "My Activities" it will show all your rides in a table format. I usually just copy the entire table to excel and add an autosum under what field I want to add up. If you have other activities other than rides you can filter just the rides also.
