Saddle for Clyde

I am up to riding 25 miles but have to say my butt hurts after a few miles. I have been riding a couple years and this has always kept me from doing long rides.

I know the brooks B17 is a good saddle after its broke in, but wondering if there is a better option for out of the box.

Also, I keep my saddle level and wondered if a little tilt would help?

Find a way to measure your sit bones, after that you will be looking for either flat or curved saddle that feels best for them. If you're looking for the leather style, Selle Anatomica X series says "no break in required" previously known as the titanico. As far as tilt goes, try flat and from there experiment nose up or down to see if either brings more comfort. Good luck on your search for the perfect saddle, it may take a few different ones...

Such a personal thing, nobody can tell you. Try to find a shop or fit service that has a quick change setup: a special seat post that allows swapping saddles in a few seconds. They will run you thru a mountain of saddles in a few minutes, then you can try it on longer rides. The saddle is not the only thing they will change to make you more comfey, of course.

Get a Brooks and just keep riding, your butt will get used to it within a few weeks. I actually find the B17 the most comfortable out of the box.

I got myself a Fizik Antares VSX (the Antares with a deep relief channel). So far, loving it!

If you can, find a shop that has a saddle rental plan, usually fizik dealers have um, and others as well.

Once I sat on a kurve chameleon I never wanted to sit on anything else.

Those using the Fizik Kurve, how much do you weight. I may give this a shot.
Just hoping it can support my 340 lb weight.

Hmm I'm at 250...not sure what the limit is. With the 2014 model (carbon shell) there was a known cracking issue which you can google.

In fact my shell cracked in May on some very rough roads just crossing the Alberta/BC border, with huge gaping crevasses that launched my water bottles into the air like rockets!

I sent the photos to fizik with serial# and they had one couriers to me within the week (very impressed with that customer service).

They sent me the new 2015 version that forgoes the carbon and uses double reinforced Kevlar instead. I've since put about 2500ish km on it with no issues whatsoever.

If you are interested it's worth maybe asking about the weight limits. It's not a cheap saddle though, but the way I see it, I consider it a key contact point and well worth it based on how much I ride.

Probably like 205# right now. The newer one have Yellow Kevlar shell now because the carbon fibers one were cracking under lighter riders than me. I haven't had probs with my cf version

You can't go wrong with a B17. The Brooks saddles even retain a good resale value. I myself use a saddle with a cut-out... but I am sure you'd know... if you needed a cut-out.

Do remember to distribute your weight. Be sure to stand from time to time so blood doesn't pool in the large [butt] muscles.

Fizik Airone for me. Came off the bike that hit the truck. You'll have to kill me to get it from me.

The problem with this technique is that most saddles can be good for 1-2hr rides. When you try it at the shop you can't really know what to expect. To know for sure you need longer rides. For me the best saddle start to show sign of discomfort at above 9hr. May take a while when you start narrowing down. Better come early at the shop.

One of the first i tried, didn't do it for me. Not wide enough. You need to have narrow sit bone for this one.

Saddles are so personal. I've been using a Toupe from Specialized for a while. It has a channel. My problem is I get pain where the edges of the saddle are. I think losing weight would fix it.

I went with the Fitzik Aliante VS X - Carbon
Amazon.com: Fizik Aliante Versus X K:ium Rails Road Bicycle Saddle, Black/Red: Sports & Outdoors

No local bike shops cary any higher end saddles but at least through Amazon I can return them if they do not work.
I really wanted to try the Kurve Bull, but until I get some more weight off just dont quite dare.

Seems like your saddle is too wide. Try to raise your handlebar to see if it solves your problem.

Perhaps, but it's more like my thighs are too fat. Based on the sit bone measurement (a.k.a. the a$$-o-meter) it's the right size.

I followed the sit bone measurement and it didn't do it for me. Sit bone measurement don't do everything. Saddle fit also depends on your riding position and what kind of clothes you're wearing as well. (among other things)

Buy your saddle from LBS not on internet. Why? LBS will give you 10/14 day try-out period, if you don't like it, bring it back, test next one. If nothing works, get your money back, and go to another shop for different brands. Good luck.
